TOPIC: The Draft

We could do a lot worse than stumbling on Angus Sheldrick in the second round. This kid does everything within his power to succeed and seems to make a habit of exceeding everyone's expectations of him. Hard at the ball in the midfield and can play tall for his size as demonstrated in the colts finals when he copped a bad cork and went forward to kick multiple goals. Kicked a ripper in the GF reminiscent of Dusty Martin dishing off the Don't argue before spinning out of trouble to kick the goal.

I'm hoping for
6 Josh Rachelle
8 Jye Amiss
19 JVR
We can get a mature age midfielder Greg Clark or Bailey Rogers with a late pick for midfield depth

I was keen to get two key forwards early, but with a cloud over Fyfe and Mundy only having about ten years left, I think we will go for another midfielder.

X years ....

Take that as either a roman numeral policy correction or in the mathematical variable sense as the man is immune to the rules of nature, biology and physics.

Actual players aside, what do the experts think is a successful draft pick in regards to games played? I’m sure expectations change depending on round selected (I.e. round 1 - 200 games, round 2 - 150 games etc).
Sorry to change the tone of the post, just interested.

Eagles will take Sheldrick - he’s right out of the Drew Banfield/Matt Priddis mould that has served them them so well. Not saying that’s a reason for us to beat them to the punch but he’d be a very good player for us.

Shades, happy to see 120 games from a first rounder and 90 from a second rounder. Anything north of that is yer profit margins.

Minimum of 150 from a top ten pick.

100 from a second round pick.

Yep, get Sheldrick at some point. Josh Carr to be his personal coach.

It's been reported this morning that Matthew Johnson, Neil Erasmus and Jye Amiss have been invited to attend the first round of the draft next week which would indicate they are highly likely to be selected.

On the other hand JVR wasn't invited which would suggest he could be available in the second round. I have my fingers crossed he lasts well into the 20's so we can trade 19 back and grab him.

I'd think we'd go with two midfielders in our first two picks given Cerra's gone, Mundy will be 37 next year and Fyfe's shoulder is cactus. The rumour is we're trying hard to trade up to pick 2 at the moment so we can snare Callaghan which I'd be pretty happy with, love the look of him.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Why pick 2? Isn't Horne-Francis pick 1 and Daicos Pick 2 just about a shoe in?

It's the second live pick. North have the first and will probably bid on Daicos before getting Horne-Francis while Darcy could also be bid on at any point in those first couple of picks.

Callaghan is a pretty exciting talent who should be in those top 4 selections however GWS probably don't need another midfielder and would be targeting an Andrews or Gibcus from most reports (lately there are suggestions they are looking at Erasmus). Their selection could be up for grabs so they can slide down the order and grab Andrews/Gibcus/Erasmus while also gaining another selection.

They currently hold 2 and 13 so a trade for our first 2 picks could be on the cards although I'd imagine they'd like us to throw more in to make the trade happen.

Callaghan seems like a great get, but do we need two midfielders straight up? Our weakness is and has mostly always been our forward line, where we have a lack of options or real star quality with big men and crumbers.

It's a risky game to play to throw your picks around in the hope that JVR might still be there in the 20s, when we would be likely to get him at 19. It appears that Amiss and Johnston will be gone by then.

And what hope do we then have for Motlop? This year Schultz was a solid contributor, but after that we got very little from our small forwards. There is the hope of a fit Sturt though.

Plus, we have already picked up Brodie to bolster the midfield, re-signed Tucker, who we don't need at half back, O'Driscoll and Valente who we are yet to see, and Clark. Where will he play? They were saying half back, but we already have two great running half backs in Walker and Young. Could any of these three go to the midfield or wing? Would though Henry and Frederick be best suited as wingmen also?

A fit squad and plenty of options would be a dream of course.
