TOPIC: The Draft

If we don't get JVR with one of our first two picks I'll be very disappointed. He's everything we've been looking for. Tall forward who crashes packs, lead up forward, kicks goals, versatile he can go to defense and pinch hit in ruck, can still influence games even when he's locked down and he's a Freo supporter. A lot of the media noise pushing others like Amiss and Erasnus is not coming from Freo people in the media and he will not be there when our third pick arrives.

Eramus and Amiss are both slime supporters, think we’d be better off getting vic country players!

Everyone knows that our biggest deficiency is our forward line, so it would surely make sense to use one if not two of our first picks in that area.
I don't see the real need to go all out for a midfielder. We've got so many backmen that you could even throw Walker or Young in there. That's how Mundy started out.

I really like Amiss. 6 ft 5 left footer with good hands on the lead. He’ll develop some more range with his set shots. I would take him with one of our first 2 picks. We have some good draft capital so I can see us getting crafty on draft day/night.

We hear the comment "we'll take the best player available". I've agreed with this in the past but of late I have a slightly different view.
I think we take the best available player at a particular pick according to our needs. So we take the best available forward at that stage of the draft if that is our primary need at that point, the best available midfielder if that is our need at that stage of the draft etc.
Of course the best available player (regardless of position) is always arguable. Hopefully our draft selectors are well clued up to make their decision.

So what happens if your "next best available player" is actually recovering from a serious injury? Is he still in the "next best" category or do we pass on him?

We do have plenty of defenders but none are arguably super elite. Most are good. But hamling has suffered a severe injury and will be 29. A Pearce could be elite but just can’t stay on the park . Logue and Cox are yet to prove themselves consistently.
This leads me to gibcus who could be a rance and his family is moving to WA next year. I don’t think he will get to us because he is extremely touted to go into the top 5 , but if slipped thru I am not sure you can go past him even though he is another defender.

What about this bloke as reported in foxsports.com.au

Josh Sinn (Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro)

Sinn could be the steal of this year’s draft, should he slip to the latter stages of the first round. A genuine line-breaker with explosive leg speed and run and carry ability, Sinn is one of the most exciting first-round prospects.
Draft Range: 10-20

The hacks in the Cheesy Headline Dept at The Worst are salivating at the prospect of us drafting Sinn...along with Amiss.

If you're worried about our backline, which personally I'm not, then the obvious big man to get is Van Rooyen, who has played as a KPP both back and forward with success at colts and state level.
Sinn sounds a lot like what we already have in Young and Walker.

I like the look of Sinn.. Speed and power with that beautiful left foot.. He could be that genuine midfielder with speed away from the stoppage but he could start his career on the wing.. I heard an interview with him and he sounded like a solid character.. I will back our recruiters in whoever they go with.. They have delivered us some great picks of late

A couple of years ago, when the draft was coming up, I said it didn't really matter because we didn't need anyone. Then we took Young, Joe Apache and Liam Henry. BONUS.

This time we need players - blokes that can (and will) kick goals. We've got the Cerra loss covered I believe, but goal kickers we need. Say what you will about Motlop's size or whatnot - he's a goal kicker, without doubt.

Go get 'em Belly.

Get Amiss. His set shot is what we need. From what I can see his commute burnt him out and that is why his form dropped. He was the best forward all year. Doesn't matter what you do in one game it's all about your body of work.
