TOPIC: The Draft

Back on Amiss, it did worry me the way he was shut out towards the end of the colts season when he came up against good sides. He went goalless in both finals and only kicked a couple in the last few rounds when up against fellow finalists. When he gets paid a bit of attention, he seems to struggle with his lead up style much harder to implement. Unfortunately, that lead up style tends to be much harder to pull off at AFL level with defenders tactically occupying space.

I also worry about his body after a knee injury and a history of injuries over the past few years. It's not a major concern but something to keep in mind.

On the other hand, JVR dominated through the finals series and the colts season, averaging more goals per game while playing all over the ground. He's good on the lead, can fly in a marking contest, can snap goals off the ground as well as being a good kick from outside 50m. His accuracy was comparable to Amiss (slightly worse) but 34 goals and 14 behinds is an extremely good strike rate. He also had to work his way back from injury at the beginning of the season.

Overall, JVR is a better player now. The question is, who is the better player in 5 and 10 years time? Amiss has an extra centimetre of height (195cm) and supposedly has had less development given his training down south. He seems more one dimensional as a player but is elite with those abilities. JVR is a more all rounded footballer and for mine, elite in more areas but has the advantage of a mature body that will be ready for AFL potentially next year (more likely after a couple of pre-seasons).
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Bizkit, do you have a projection based model on who might be the better player in 5-10 years? I'm looking for a mix of historical demographics, draft combine results, player attributes and traits, but also if you could call out mean regression, that would help me form an opinion. On Dockerland. An informed opinion.

On Dockerland.

I would be handing over Pick 10(8) for JVR and taking best available at 8(6), whether that’s Rochelle, Eramus, Hobbs, Ward or Wanganeen-millera is up to our recruiting team. We will get Benning as a matched bid or better yet as a cat-B rookie if no bids come. JVR and Benning will provide depth/succession for Tabs and Lobb when the injuries inevitably come, with Cox able to swing forward if they come early next year. So 21(19) we could drop down a couple of places to get back into next years draft, which is looking a bit slim with only our 1st and Gellong’s 4th at present.

B1R1 - love a good Numberphile video. Hadn't seen that one before. Now I know what they're talking about in the Marvel universe. Does this mean that testing for tesseract awareness might snare us an avenger at the draft?

Biz, I think the problem with Amiss at top level will be that he doesn't have the physical presence to crash the defenders blocking space, JVR looks more that type. As for 1 trick ponies, if their trick is kicking for goal at 85-90% accuracy, and they get the footy a bit, that 1 trick is good enough for me. There are plenty of versatile players up the groung to cover the rest.

As for Naughton, if I was him, I would be more upset with being compared with "WCE All Australian Star Andrew McGovern" Talk about a 1 trick pony. ( or should that be "1 trick pie-eater"

The best way to appreciate the 4th dimension and applying it to the Draft is to consider Fyfe for example.
Look at the player we drafted back then... pick 20 I believe. Now look at the player that Fyfe has become.
The 4th dimension here is time lapse.
Now it's up to our recruiting team to extract the best 4D pick component from the draft.

I've been thinking about this for a bit - what I would do is pick up Charlie Constable (Andy's best mate) as a free agent and then draft two talls with our first three draft picks.

Fox footy reporting we may trade 6 & 8 with GWS for 2 &13 as we try to move up to land Callaghan. If we can pull this off 13 would be the perfect spot to select JVR.

Edit: GWS are keen on Mac Andrew but think it’s reaching at pick 2 but he’ll probably still be there at pick 6 (the tigers at 7 are also interested as they lost Chol and Colman-Jones) so effectively they get their target and move 13 up to 8. I’d say this would probably happen on the night once they are fairly sure Suns, Crows and Hawks aren’t going to take Andrew with picks 3,4 & 5.

I think the whole pick swap stuff is a load of bs. It’s just another way go red the AFL to make things compromised and more complex than it need be. It also ensures the AFL stays in the media for 365 days.

I'm actually ok with trading up like that PK. FC & JVR > options at 6 & 8 as I read it, I feel those picks (6&8) are in a bit of a risky range for us in a year where the Victorian have been a bit hidden.
