TOPIC: The Draft

Expat, that won’t work as the future 3rd round pick is useless to the dogs trying to match a bid for Darcy, we’d be better off trading our future 3rd to someone else for a pick in the 40’s this year, then bundle that pick with 27 to get 17.

What I find amazing is the number of players being mentioned in Trading circles who have not achieved much at the clubs they were drafted to, who have been played mainly out of position since being drafted.
Jordan Clark played mainly as a defender but true position as a winger
SPS being played as a defender when he played his best football pre draft as a mid/forward
Lewis Young taken as a key forward but used as key defender/ruck
Not up for trade but our own Brennan Cox, All Australian CHB played predominantly by Ross Lyon before being returned to defense by JLo
Is this the fault of recruiters just grabbing best player available without a thought to their club's true needs? I'm not sure but I think the way they just go in with the attitude of not letting another club get certain players to fit their needs inevitably leads to some outstanding talents being tossed on the scrap heap as the kids struggle to live up to the hype surrounding their high selections.

Who says they are being played out of their true position? Their managers normally. Maybe there simply not as good as they think they are.

Not all of those are true and players are supposed to be versatile. A large part of your draft year is to show versatility and that you can play different roles. It helps to show off various attributes and help clubs assess where you may best be suited.

For example, Clark played as a half back with stints pushing onto a wing in his first season at Geelong. He kicked 11 goals in 19 games which would be incredibly difficult to do from half back. He's always been earmarked for a wing but the Cats went and traded in the likes of Smith and Higgins while still having Duncan and Menegola for the position. Now Clark's spent the season stuck at half forward and very unhappy.

SPS was always a midfielder before being drafted but then played as a half forward in his first season at Carlton before a move to half back. Puzzling and not great for his development, especially when they had so little other than Cripps in the middle.

I've probably said it a dozen times now but Cox was a forward before being drafted (and played defense similar to the way Van Rooyen has recently done for WA). I would still play him there for his natural football nous and marking ability.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Point taken Biz, I just think that some of these kids are quite young and still maturing and when they are taken away from home and family some can tend to lose their way especially once the glamour and excitement of the initial drafting experience has worn off. You only have to go back through the years and look at those first round picks who were flops at AFL level after promising everything as a junior. For this reason I'd love to see more mature agers drafted.

The environment draftees experience once drafted is a huge part of them becoming a quality AFL player. You can select the most talented player in the draft but if you don't have the right support, tools and developmental structures in place to help them realise their talent, they'll fall away. Carlton is a great example of this with numerous top picks not going anywhere due to many of these factors. Mature age draftees aren't immune from those factors.

Freo seem to be in a really good spot for developing kids at present with a young list, lots of opportunities, a relatively open game style and plenty of support from more mature guns. I'd prefer to see us continue with the kids.

Me too Biz. I'm just one of those who thinks that the Draft in general targets the kids at too young an age. A year in the seniors at WAFL or SANFL wouldn't hurt. Having said that, JVR has played seniors for Claremont and the number 1 favorite Horne-Francis is a star in the SANFL so I guess it depends on the individual. In the current setup I'm with you on getting the good kids first and like you pointed out our support at at the Fremantle is second to none.

I know this is looking way ahead… what does next years draft look like.. if not so great on wa talent I would go hammer and tong to get picks as many picks inside the first 2 rounds and get the top end wa talent from this year

It's pretty difficult to forecast next years draft given the covid interruptions faced by those kids on the Eastern states. We have the U16's carnivals a couple years ago and some games earlier this season but not anywhere near as much footy as previous seasons.

Next year shouldn't be impacted by covid as much so we won't have a good idea till then.

What about the WA kids Biz? There were a few “bottom ages” in the state game weren’t there?

WA should have a strong contingent for next years draft, it's just hard to quantify them with the Eastern states kids.

We have some 2022 draftees tied to Freo's NGA who are likely to go before we can match a bid like Jed Hagan while Jed Busslinger and Kane Bevan are shaping as first round picks, if not top 10.

The one who's really impressed me and come from no where a little this season is Jackson Broadbent who made his debut earlier in the season as Peel's ruckman despite not being draft eligible till next year. He's a massive unit who covers the ground really well and has incredibly impressive skills for a ruckman. Early signs are that he could be one of those generational ruckman who actually get picked in the top 10. It's rare for clubs to gamble on ruckman with high selections given how much development ruckman require but Broadbent has shown he is a gun already. We may not need him since we have Darcy but I'd still love to get him in purple.

Overall, I think WA will have a higher top end selected in the draft next season however the overall quality of the draft is tough to determine.

Hey Biz, do you know of any father/son prospects? I know there's Ben Allan's son at Claremont but Ben didn't play enough games for him to qualify. Any more?

I don't know of any who are showing anything but if there are any father/son prospects, they'd be in the Freo academy.
