TOPIC: Jordan Clark

With the deadline looming and all the posturing that's been happening, let's hope for Peter Bell's sake that he's remembered to adjust his watch to eastern daylight savings time.

It’s not as simple as black and white. Yes we want Jordan but at a price we feel is correct. I don’t think pick 19 and pick 22 and a future 3 is close to simply pick 22( which is our offer).

If we give up our future 3 in the deal we have only one pick next year?

Giving up pick 19 is not simply 3 spots from 22.

It is tough. I rate Jordan highly from the highlights I have seen. But I am not sure what the draft talent is like at pick 19 this year or what next years round 3 is going to be like.

Very tough decision. But if you are offering a 4 year contract and our skipper is out in the media telling people how great it would to get him, than Geelong will not fold.

How many times do you use the difference between 4 picks as a reason to get a little more in a trade? Clark's value likely lies somewhere between pick 30-40 and we were paying slight overs in the first place at 27. We then did further dealing and selling of picks to jump up to 22. Now we have to jump up even further past his value to 19 or give another future pick which is valued at far more than a few less kids on the table. Where do you stop?

It also depends a lot on the structure of the draft as to how picks are valued. This year the draft pool is widely seen as reasonably even from about pick 4/5 to 20 before a drop off to the next tier (which is another reason that first pick of the second round will be valuable). It also depends on who has a pick ahead of you and who they rate. There's a strong reason Brisbane paid a huge price to move up 1 spot in the draft for Deven Robertson.

To drill the trade down to 'a gap of 4 untested 17 year olds' is very inaccurate and not representative of the situation.

Given that both camps have staked their claims in very strong terms it will be a surprise to me if either party gives in to the trade. Bell and Wells (Hocking) have big egos that will make it hard for them to blink. I hope I’m wrong but I can see this ending in a non trade purely because neither party will want to look like they folded first.

I know I'll probably get knocked down on this, but do we need independent arbitrators to help sort out these standoffs where both sides may have a valid stance but there is a chance that nothing happens. Could this be a rep from Players Association as the loser is certainly the player if nothing gets done.

Geebungs ego was pumped up with the Kelly trade to the ooftits and they think they can do the same to us.
The arogance of scott is coming through here.

Reminds me of the blackmail scenario where you pay up the first time then get screwed for more and more as time goes by.
The trick is to stand up in the first place and tell the blackmailer to be given advice about sex and travel.

Sounds great Gumnut, but you can just see Melbourne clubs making off like bandits poaching from interstate clubs with offers the VFL arbiter deems reasonable.

Anyway I recon 22 and late pick swap is the middle ground that gets the deal done.

No surprise but disturbing how impactful AFL journos / commentators are here. All of a sudden in media Clark is a 'Gun', 'pick 19 is fair'.

Lot of talk freo should be the one to blink, and leaking of the alleged call between Wells and Clarke.

Following along on Twitter and the trolls absolutely coming after Clark.

Interesting sub-plot is narrative he was given assurances he'd get more game time before agreeing to stay.

We were clearly more than happy to pay 22 because we exerted a lot of effort to get it. The offer of 27 is irrelevant at that point.

This year's draft pool is made up of WA kids who look good because the Victorian kids have been in and out of lockdown. The form lines being used are patchy, in a field which has never been particularly accurate. The notion that each pick is equal distance apart in value is an industry delusion.

Me too Monty, I know it's overs but I really want him in the Purple next year. Let's not forget where that future pick came from. Adam Cerra for pick 6 and Future 3rd rounder being used to help get Jordan Clark into Fremantle. I'd say that was a fair result.
We can work on improving next year's draft hand before next November. This is a deal we only get one chance at grabbing.

I don't think we were happy to pay pick 22 but we put the effort in and went over the top to meet Geelongs demands. To continually do that and go well above his value is shooting yourself in the foot. We paid the higher price already since he was contracted but you don't follow the OOFTIT's route with the Kelly trade.

I'm of the belief we're likely to pick up Victorians opposed to WA kids and I'm happy to do so. We've seen a lot of the WA kids but I've liked a few of the Vics too. Our recruiters have generally done quite well with our selections so I'm happy to back them in.

In terms of valuing picks an equal amount, I was arguing against that so I'm glad you're on board! There could be a huge difference between 1 selection based on who's available among a raft of other factors.

Also, the Cerra trade was not equitable. We gave up a current young star of the competition for no where near his worth (pick 8 and some change). The squad is far poorer for it and will be long term.

I think everyone in the AFL except for Geelong think that. It's seven places back from where he was drafted, and he is currently a fringe player, injury prone, and was out of favour at Geelong. Geelong are the ones posturing being d$%ks, not us. And we did the Cerra deal in days, in reality for unders. The whole contracted/uncontracted is a bit of a smokescreen anyway. Its a 'break glass in case of emergency' to get to where you want to uncontracted via the PSD, no-one really pulls the trigger on that anymore...

This from earlier today,
-via SEN’s Sam Edmund said on Wednesday Clark recently had a “heated phone conversation” with Cats recruitment boss Stephen Wells.

“Things are reaching boiling point between Geelong and Fremantle over a deal for the half-back, winger that is desperately wanting to get to Fremantle,” Edmund told SEN Mornings.

“I can tell you in the last few days Jordan Clark and the list manager at Geelong Stephen Wells had a heated phone conversation where Jordan Clark told Stephen Wells in no uncertain terms, ‘I want this deal done’. Words to the effect of, ‘I’m not coming back. I’m desperate to get to Fremantle. Please make this happen’.

“To which Wells responded, again, with words to the effect of, ‘If we can find a deal suitable for both parties, we’ll orchestrate a trade. If we can’t, then you are contracted here, and you will be coming back to Geelong’.

“I’m told that shortly thereafter Jordan Clark hung up on Stephen Wells.

KLooks to me we meet Geelong initial demand of a pick between 8 & 27. This took us trading 27 plus a future third. Then we did a seperate deal to secure 19 for ourselves. Geelong got bigger eyes and look at 19 and see this as the leverage an additional third. Effectively gaining them 27 and two thirds. We wouldnt of agreed to this a week ago so why now.
As far as owing Clark something for a 4 year deal being offered, does anyone really think Freo would’ve said whatever it takes. If Geelong wants to use this at leverage then offer an additional 3 years to Clark. They are using him as a pawn. I think they probably see Stengle as a similar player. He was promised more game time and they recruited Higgins and Smith. Geelong are the the team showing zero respect to the player making the most of his career. If he was playing different story.
Pick 22 is already more than we would’ve liked to pay. Rewind two weeks and we may as well have speculated on SPS and 6 for Cerra.
