Nah, you just get him to sign a longer contract as part of the trade.

Third time lucky, right?

And now a bit more Dogpower at Freo with Bob Murphy to join us in an off field role. I like Bob and I think he will definitely a great team man to have around the club.

Stats at dawn folks:

Picks 6 to 10 will yield approx 140 AFL games per player. Two picks around there is 280 games of quality AFL football. Thats the box, to expand on Shane's phrasing.

Now in the case of that Machiavellian little scallywag, you'd be lucky to get a third of that.

Take the box. The box. Walls is really good at determining what's in the box.

Those sorts of comparisons are horribly misrepresentative of the draft process and quality of player you get. For example there are many clubs who will reach and draft someone of need rather than the next best player. Clubs who will go local instead of the next best, clubs who have poorer talent identification or clubs who develop their talent poorly once drafted. Then there's the higher level of unpredictability when talls are drafted as they have to adjust to far more moving into the AFL than a midfielder.

On top of all that you have weaker drafts (like Logue's year) and compromised drafts (2010-12) where the players are likely to be weaker due to concessions granted. Even going back past those drafts isn't particularly representative with poorer talent identification and pathways to the AFL making it more difficult to get an idea of what's available and who is good/overated.

The modern draft is far more of a science, even with Covid considerations. The quality of picks in the last 4/5 years probably shows as much. There's no Meesen on the table, it's more likely the next Serong or Cox.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I'm all for drafting, you need to do it a minimum 3 times a year. But I can't see the point drafting guys that go home after 60 games. At least Lachie put in 135.

You can argue that losing guys like Roberton, Langdon, Crozier & even Weller hasn't hurt but I guess none of these are potential stars like Cerra?

Pav & Mundy stayed I guess. But who's to say young Caleb won't be made an offer by someone in a year or two.

Maybe a younger player’s need to return home or play elsewhere is directly proportionate to on field struggles. A team that’s rebuilding through the draft, playing lots of young blokes and not winning many games for a couple of seasons, must expect to contend with one or two of their top quality kids starting to look elsewhere, or being easily persuaded to move to another club ‘back home’ where success seems easier to achieve.

If Freo really are on the cusp of becoming one of the top teams, as some commentators have said this season (but only usually after a win), then Caleb won’t want to go anywhere and Cerra will live to regret his decision.

Or maybe not.

I will say with absolute certainty, Cerra would live to regret leaving if he ended up in a RoLy coached hell-hole. He was drafted into one, he would know.

When he said "next best mid", did that open an option for Lachie? Or was it only for "young" players, not old boys?

Just checked the draft central rankings (twoomey is too slow, hasn’t done a sept update yet) then reread Garlic’s statement, I reckon they are definitely looking at Eramus,

#9 Neil Erasmus
Subiaco/Western Australia | Midfielder
2/12/2003 | 188cm | 80kg

August Ranking: #9

Snapshot: Initially an exciting forward who has since transitioned wonderfully well into midfield, Erasmus lays claim to eye-catching traits both aerially and at ground level.

The other WA products are listed as follows:
#14 Jye Amiss
East Perth/Western Australia | Tall Forward
31/07/2003 | 195cm | 85kg

August Ranking: #19

Snapshot:

You’ll hear plenty of puns regarding the key forward’s ironic surname but it’s true that Amiss is more hit than, well, miss. The East Perth spearhead has dominated the 2021 WAFL Colts season thus far, booting 51 goals in 13 games with a ridiculously good conversion rate of 78 per cent from his scoring shots.

#19 Matthew Johnson
Subiaco/Western Australia | Midfielder
16/03/2003 | 193cm | 80kg

August Ranking: #15

Snapshot: With smooth agility and clean hands at the contest, Johnson is one of the premier tall midfielders in this year’s draft crop and has plenty of upside.

#21 Jack Williams
East Fremantle/Western Australia | Tall Forward/Ruck
1/12/2003 | 195cm | 91kg

August Ranking: #20

Snapshot: Williams is a versatile tall prospect who thrives aerially and consistently kicks goals up forward, while also rotating through the ruck or even to defence.

#29 Jesse Motlop (FRE NGA)
South Fremantle/Western Australia | Small Forward/Midfielder
23/11/2003 | 176cm | 74kg

August Ranking: NR

Snapshot: A highly skilled small forward with great goal sense, speed and smarts, Motlop comes from good pedigree and can make his presence known in a flash.

#30 Jacob van Rooyen
Claremont/Western Australia | Tall Forward/Defender
16/04/2003 | 194cm | 88kg

August Ranking: NR

Snapshot: van Rooyen is a tall forward who presents well with strong hands and a booming kick, but has also shown great potential as a swingman and even in midfield.

Imagine getting 3 of these boys in to go with the rest of our young stars esp guys like Chapman, Freddy, Young, Sturt, Henry, Walker, Western etc that havent really established themselves yet with guns like Brayshaw, Serong, Darcy, Ryan, Cox, Logue etc
Dynasty springs to mind

Eventually CEO's Draft Priorities 2 years 7 months ago #28

Eventually
Assuming we pick up at least Carltons pick 6 for Cerra maybe we should then look to see if Brisbane would be interested in swapping their first 2 picks -14 and 18 for our pick 8, points wise we are certainly not losing and it gives us a chance on picking up 2 WA young guns ahead of the pack and Brisbane win by scoring an early pick. We need to be ready with extra late first and early second round picks to have a chance at grabbing the WA boys. Another option could be swapping our 8 and 27 for their 14,18,47,51 picks giving us 2 early picks and some handy 3rd round picks. All up I think we are in great position to net at least 3 excellent WA draft prospects which would compliment our young squad wonderfully.
