TOPIC: Is Lachie coming back?

Less of a player, my left aggot!

You may remember a midfield, ironically at Brisbane, of Voss, Black and Lappin, a handy Hart as well, who added an Akermanis to the mix and history tells the rest.

There are no Lyon encumbrances any more and Lachie will fit right in superbly.

I don't know if this can be done or not, but I am liking the fact Freo are becoming a destination club and to dream is what the season is about.

Im not sure how Cerra leaving and Neale coming back to his old home for family reasons, makes us a destination club?

He's playing much better at Brisbane than he was at Fremantle. At Fremantle he was just getting the ball a lot, without much impact and he wasn't being used in a way that allowed him to dispose of the ball in any meaningful manner. It was just - get it and get rid of it to a runner.

At Brisbane, he holds the ball longer at Brisbane and creates the play. Fyfe was the only player a Fremantle who was allowed to make the play on his own terms under Ross Lyon. Everyone else had to play a role. He'll be a much more valuable player the second time around.

They also had Bradshaw, Lynch and White as marking targets in their forward line. Would like that sort of targets for us. Even when Neale was with us before we couldn't kick winning scores.
Doesn't matter how good your midfield is if you don't have a decent spread of forwards.

Name another noteworthy footballer who has told his club "I want you to trade me to Fremantle"?

Now they'll be clambering over each other to get here first.

I'd disagree on his disposal impact. He's been pretty poor with it, a lot of one/two handpasses to someone going nowhere or easy balls running around the back of a player who's taken a mark. While he was in my DuFFLe side I laughed and cheered it on but for Freo, that has little impact and is just stat padding. What we need is more outside run with beautiful disposal, pretty much what Cerra has done and what we'll lose when Mundy goes. Neale doesn't help us there. He averaged higher stat lines for Freo before he left when we were finishing at the bottom of the ladder. His impact is likely to be the same.

Serong is the one who will suffer most in Neale's return as they essentially play the same role with Brayshaw. That's who we're going to be sacrificing to bring in Neale and we'll still need to find more of an inside/out midfielder to replace Cerra/Mundy.

I see Neale as being good for a year or two before falling away dramatically and having little impact. In the meantime we stall Serong's development and risk his future at the club while missing out on a talented footballer who will be at the club for a decade (if we trade our top pick). It just makes no sense for the club list wise.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

If you reckon anything other than plonking Serong in a back pocket or having Ross Lyon as a coach will stall his career, you are a fool.

If you believe Neale is the difference between us missing the 8 the past couple years and winning a premiership in the next 2, you are deluded.

It's the continual progression of our kids that will drive us and not a mercenary coming back to retire at the tail end of his career. Certainly not when it costs more talented youth.

It was interesting to hear the “unbiased” comments of sumich this morning. That lachie should go to west coast and that lachie has not said he wants to go to freo. What a plonker.

I cannot see how we can take him. I love lachie a fabulous footy player but we have an opportunity to get a descent pick for cerra and the wa draft pool this year is full of talent.

I can see why Lachie might be a bit polarizing based on whether you think he is a turncoat who turned his back on Freo, or someone who didn’t want to work for Ross Lyon, but putting that to the side I agree with Bizkit that it would be a bad football decision bringing him back.

So let’s take the emotion around Neale away. Neale and Tom Mitchell from Hawthorn are very similar players. You can basically see them on one of those Industry Superfund comparisons: Same age, same position, both Brownlow medallists. Mitchell gets more of the footy (about an extra 7 touches a game this year), but I think Neale is slightly better at using it (the stats say Mitchell is more efficient, but I think Neale has better penetration on his kick).

In terms of value, I’d say they would be as close to equal as you can get.

So, would you offer, say, pick 6 for Tom Mitchell, and if you did, how quickly do you think Hawthorn would take the deal?

Building a list is about using the salary and picks most efficiently to build a list. I don’t know how anyone can look at the list as currently constructed, and think something like pick 6 and $800,000 a year for Neale is the most efficient use of picks and salary. In the next couple of years we will need to re-sign Serong and Young. If you think the offers came for Cerra, wait until those guys tick over into the last year of their contracts.

The only way it makes sense is if you were thinking of playing Fyfe forward (where he’s not very good), or trading him.

What did Hawthorn pay for Mitchell draft pick wise?

I just think its all an utter red herring.

We have a real chance to fill some missing pieces on our list with quality WA players. And another thing - he made a commitment to Brisbane who front ended his deal. And now he is into the back end of that deal. And it seems this has been in the making for a while. Its odious. He may not have liked Lyon, but its all straight out of his playbook.

I would take enormous pleasure in our football department saying, no thanks. Let him go to the Eagles. I don't think he'll come out of this looking good. irrespective of whether he stays or goes.

And this notion that he's playing better now under Fagan than Lyon is self serving nonsense.

He won a Brownlow medal under Fagan, hypen. With 200 less disposals than his best season at Fremantle. His handball count nearly halved when he went to Brisbane. He is playing a different game.
