Do you think Peter Bell gets to the club, sits down with his coffee to read the paper and goes -

Oh, yeah. I was planning on paying overs for Lachie Neale but not paying overs is an even better idea. Thanks again for your brilliant insight, Braden Quartermaine

No trade but we should be looking at Van Rooyen or Amiss as a succession plan particularly due to our key forwards injury history.
We've only ever had one really good big forward in our club history, when other clubs can field two in the one side.
I'm sure Treacy wasn't expected to have played so many games in his first season and who knows if Sturt will get where we hope.
We seem to have pretty good coverage over other areas of the ground but our forward line has been our weakness for years.

Fyfe is 29. Mundy is 82. Walters moves like he's in his 60's. I reckon we need to get a move on or we will be rebuilding for ever. Particularly since we keep losing their replacements.

When the midfield get delivery right, we have a working forward line. We are a couple of years and some luck away from being a top 4 side but Cerra leaves a hole that a draft pick can't fill.

Cerra is worth more than Neale though, we should be able to end up with Neale and a decent draft pick from the potential trade.

Agree Shane. Cerra is a 10 year pickup for any team. Neale May have 5 left. It’s a bit like the Judd Kennedy deal which most people say was won by WCE because Kennedy had more upside in his remaining days. Cerra has more upside, he will get better and will play longer, so he is worth more than Neale. My only concern in getting Neale is that he lifts the age profile of our midfield. As pointed out by Shane, it’s not a good outcome to have Neale, Mundy and Fyfe heading towards the end of their careers.

I'm sure Neale is fully aware of what he can deliver and how many productive seasons he has left. The thing is, Neale is an achiever - he has proven that multiple times. To say otherwise is simply guessing.

We can still pick up another mid next year with our first pick.. pick up Amiss this year and a mid next year.. I don’t really see it as a problem.. Mundy probably retires next year and we replace him with a kid.. get a key forward this year

Neale will be 29 in the first few rounds of next season and won't be around much longer. If his body holds together (which it very much didn't this year as my DuFFLe team suffered because of it) then you realistically say he's got 3 more years and most of that on the downward spiral. Is that when we're challenging for a premiership? Maybe towards the end of that which would be driven by the youth, not Neale. Would you prefer a 32yo Neale surviving the season or a gun young mid/forward in their 3rd season with their whole career ahead of them?

Nevermind he's the same player as Serong and Brayshaw so will take their midfield time and CBA's considering you need at least one of Fyfe/Mundy or a bigger bodied mid running through there. I'd much prefer to keep those two kids in the thick of it and find a better balanced inside/out mid to replace Cerra. There's a lot available this season and we should land some good draft capital from the Cerra trade.

What did we get in return for that mercenary Neale when he left in his prime, pick 6? There's no way we should give up a first round pick in any case for him. he'd be a second rounder at best and I wouldn't pay that either. Anyone who saw his 46 wasted/ineffectual possessions in a final and thinks that was a valuable performance hasn't watched much footy. Serong and Brayshaw had far better 23 possession games this season.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I really can't see how we can get this deal done. We only have picks 8 & 27 plus Cerra.
What would Brisbane want as they are losing a Brownlow medallist and they have picks 15, 18, 47, 52, 57, 73?
Plus somehow we need to replace 7 players.
I hope this deal doesn't ruin our chances of getting 2 or 3 gun West Aussies.

Me- A second round pick for the reigning Brownlow medalist? You must be joking.

Unless we expect to win a flag in the next two years you cant sell the farm to get Neale. Getting Neale means a potential midfield hole in the list after after that time if we are essentially swapping him Cerra (plus draft pick switches). Cerra gave use a 10 year elite midfield, Neale leaves us with Brayshaw and Serong as long term midfielders. Neale should only be considered if we get a trade we cant refuse. We need to take a strong stance.

The medal doesn't change the player he is Down on Down. He was doing that at Freo but Fyfe took all his votes and was a far better player. At the Lions he had very few people taking votes off him so was able to win the brownlow. He's less of a player now than when we traded him, only he now has a banged up body and a few years left rather than when he was in his prime.

The lines of opinion appear to be drawn.

The NYET, NYET, NYET side is championed by Biz with his fully rational (albeit jaded by his recent unsuccessful drafting of Neale as a near top draft pick for his DuFFLe team) insistence of heading to the draft fully armed with a couple of high picks to add some scrawny kids into the team;

On the other hand, Stoney fronts up with his barely discernable, grog fuelled, free-form grammatically thrashed ramblings that seem to say damn the torpedoes, grab the b*stard at any cost and let's get a flag before Mikey and Fyfe get wheeled into a nursing home.

Tough choice, what a dilemma.
