TOPIC: Is Lachie coming back?

Just like the trade picks we got for Neale back in 2018, it will be another turning point in our rebuild. We unfortunately blew it with the hogan pick , where initially belly walked away. I recall at the time Langdon on 6pr saying it was a good decision by bell as he had heard that hogan had issues. I also recall a Duffield article in the west on that Saturday before we changed our mind and went back to get hogan , that the dockers were in a prime position with all the lachie Neale picks from brissy as well our own low pick to get a bundle of first round picks and boost our rebuild.

Hopefully lesson learned. Use cerra picks for talented wa kids.

Dockers please hold firm, no one can criticise you for going for talented wa kids.

I cut to the chase - Lachie Neale will be at Freo next season. How that happens is the current unknown. But if Lachie and his wife want to return it will happen and my guess is that Freo will be keen to make it happen.. The term prodigal son is appropriate - read the parable.

I am fine with Neale coming back as long as the price is right. The general arguments I get from the rest have been:

1. He left us, so stuff him. Counter- he left a really dysfunctional team with a terrible culture for the money he was worth. The situation has changed, he wants to come back. I am fine with that.
2. We have too many players like him. Counter- injuries, let's worry about fitting them all in come round one.
3. The cost in draft picks. This is the crux. If he has 2-3 years left then he is worth a lot less than when we sold him in his prime. Second rounder with a fringe player at most. Future picks if it's more. No first rounder. Otherwise it's no dice.

I see this as a win win for Freo. We either pick up a great player to bolster our team or we pick up some young talent. I just hope the management see it that way.

When I read the statement "our local press are saying the request will come", I stopped worrying about how we will fit Lachie in and what he will cost, and went back to arguing with myself whether JVR is a forward or a defender.

I was keen originally but the price that is getting discussed '2 first round draft picks' does have me worried now.

Predictably, the Melbourne media are way overstating what Freo should offer to get Neale. I heard two yesterday say it’s “at least two first round picks”. DO NOT do it, FFC. Neale would be handy, but it has to be on our terms. We’re not somehow required to take him. Don’t sell the draft farm. This feels like a big test for the club.

AFL360 seem to think pick 6 for Cerra and then we give up that pick plus 8 for Neale.
If I was to put Neale and Cerra side by side I would take Cerra. We shouldn’t even entertain that scenario. Go to the draft with our picks

To me this comes down to pretty basic supply and demand economics.
Cerra is apparently under demand from some clubs in Vic and his manager has indicated he wants a good deal for Freo (which admittedly would be secondary to a good deal for Cerra). End result we should be able to get a fair trade.
Neale is different. Unless WCE decide to muddy the waters, there is only one option if Neale want to move west. Neale also has limited currency compared to Cerra - maybe 3-5 years vs 10). In other words the demand for Neale’s services isn’t as great as those for Cerra. Having Neale will be a win for the next couple of years, having Cerra will be a win for the next 8 (as mentioned previously, think Judd/Kennedy).
We should come out of this with Neale and some handy draft picks otherwise let Neale stay with the contract he willingly signed.

I'd tell Neale to stay put for another 12 months. Meanwhile, we load up on local WA tallent.

Probably what has softened my thinking is that Covid may have turned a young mum to be's life upside down and a reluctant Neale will head back to her home in WA. So in that regard my dislike of Neale probably has clouded my judgement. As I would have normally thought of that particularly as Cerra just went ok record with something similar.

And yeah in any case, forget the little turd he's not worth our time or picks.

expat you achieve the same thing with doing a deal for next year’s picks. Use this year’s to load up on what looks like a pretty good draft and still get Lachie for 2022 season.

You have to cut the Victoria media people some slack. Lockdown is tough and they're probably not functioning at their best.
