Win win. The AFL jury looks tough rubbing him out of finals, they appeal, he gets a week and everyone can face their families once more, knowing one of the biggest miscarriages of justice this country has ever seen, has been righted, and damn quick too.

I didn't make a comment on whether I thought it was excessive or not. I was commenting on what I thought GWS would do.

I think there is an argument they can make in an appeal. Depending on what the official statement says and if it differs from the reporting of what was said, the tribunal heard evidence which they did not seem to take into account when giving the verdict.

But I don't think they would have bothered if it was a lesser penalty.

I understand the 3 weeks. One week for each charge - aggressive, demonstrative and disrespectful. All directed at an umpire whose space and body are sacrosanct. Greene knows this - I think?

I have wondered in the past whether abuse of an umpire should not also incur a team penalty, viz. loss of 4 premiership points or in the case of really bad behavior 8 premiership points. During finals it could be deduction of scoring points like the equivalent of 4 goals from the score of the team to which the offending player belongs. These penalties would be imposed by a tribunal post-match of course. These sorts of penalties would I think severely change the mind set of many players vis a vis umpires and their decisions.

I’m guessing one reason they chose not to appeal is that it would be a distraction for the team in an already challenging week.

A real shame not to see Toby play this week. I hope Stevic is recovering from the trauma of the incident.

A heavy fine would’ve been sufficient.

I don't hold Stevic in quite as high regard as hypen ("best umpire in the history of AFL"), because I still rankle at one of the worst displays of umpiring I can remember. Admittedly my old memory is no longer troubled by allowing the risk of accuracy to intrude, but I recollect a game some years ago against the Bullies in Victoria, in which they received over 20 frees, and we were blessed with 4. And one of the umpires...I recall it was Stevic...awarded us not one free for the entire game. Zero.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong...

Toby needs to pull his head in. I’m sure there is some nuance to this I’m missing, but according to the AFL’s National Player and Official Deregistration Policy players shall be automatically deregistered and not allowed further registration with the same or another Club or League [for at least 12 months] if the Player has served a combined total of sixteen (16) matches Suspension (or greater) as a Player as a result of Reportable Offences only.

He's currently at 11 games so he should be getting his written warning in the mail shortly.

Gil wants to appeal it. I'm not sure he gets to express personal opinions on things though. He either expresses the AFL's opinion or he doesn't comment.
