TOPIC: Coniglio for Cerra?

Deals from twenty years ago are reasonably irrelevant in the current market.

More recently, 25yo Tim Kelly was traded for a first round pick and two second rounders. 22yo Jaeger O'Meara went for a top 10 and early second round pick. 25yo Lachie Neale was traded for Pick 6 and 19 (effectively a first rd pick). 25yo Dion Prestia was traded for 6 and a swap of later picks which also netted a future 2nd round pick. 25yo Dylan Shiel was traded for Pick 9 and a future first round pick.

All of these players were older than Cerra with less left to give. I'd argue none had shown anywhere near as much as Cerra by the age of 21 with only O'Meara getting close (but having serious injuries effect how much he was worth). This trade is effectively unprecedented given the age and output of Cerra.

Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

There are ten teams in Melbourne all of them have the ability to position themselves to offer better than pick six, and a non starting player.
Hopefully Cerra will work with the club to ensure that we are compensated appropriately.

We need to be bold. Sam Walsh is only contracted at Carlton until the end of next year.

I didn't include Weller as he wasn't a midfielder or in the same class as the rest of those mentioned. He was more of a half back who had potential to move into the middle opposed to Cerra who is a pure and proven midfielder already. Cerra is a class or two above Weller.

That's why we need something better than pick 2 in return.

Every year I forget how this works. If we don't do a deal with anyone, Cerra goes in the draft, and the first team that wants him gets him. Right? Does he have any right of refusal? For example, say he lasted to pick 8, could we take him again?

If we do make a deal with a club, then he doesn't go in the draft and goes to that club. The nature of the deal is between us and the other club (provided all the usual salary cap/list management/other rules are ok)?

Or does the AFL somehow step in and tell us what compensation we get for him?

A player nominates how much they want to be paid. If they are drafted, their only other option would be to sit the year out and nominate for the draft again the next year.

I think they can only nominate a salary in the pre season draft ala Jack Martin. If he was to nominate for the national draft it’s open slather. A trade will get done.

So if North Melbourne don't want him, GWS could offer Cerra the salary that he specified, even if they don't want him. Cerra sits the year out, and Carlton miss out.

Correct. Carlton landed Martin this way as they massively top ended his contract. Apparently around 1million in the first year. No other team could fit this on the books so he made it to them at their pick in the PSD. With the big contracts of McKay, Cripps and Walsh Carlton won’t be able to do this confidently.

So North can just take him in the pre-season draft? For some reason I thought they got rid of the PSD.

Can North trade pick 1 in the PSD to Carlton?

North would have bucket loads of cash as they were getting ready to raid GWS for Kelly which won't happen. He'd never make it past their first pick if he nominated for the pre-season draft but it will never get to that point. They'll have to deal with us for him.

It's not purely Carlton he goes to in any case. The good thing about Victoria is there are a lot of options and a lot of potential suitors. The question is, how much does Cerra's prospective salary restrict who he deals with? The Tigers need to stay relevant and should be clearing a little cap space at the moment while holding some decent picks to trade with. The Roos will have the most room in their salary cap and also pick 1 to deal with (which may get pushed to 2 or 3 in any case). Cerra's the perfect age for their list and they are cashed up, looking for a big fish.

I'd much rather deal with them and get the first live pick (Jason Horne) than any later selections. We can deal with minor selections after that but Horne is a gun now who will impact in his first season.
