Two things have annoyed me today. Really given me the irrits. Shane will delete if I express the depth of my feelings through swearing. But think of the worst swearing you’ve heard in both English and Croatian and you might get close.

First The scheduling of our game. Saturday early morning and no free to air live. It is a disservice to David Mundy that his 350th is not being played as a stand alone Saturday night game with free to air nationwide. He is one of only 18 players to have reached 350 games. He deserves the accolades.

Second and this one really has me seething. Simpson and his assertion hat AFL clubs will only draft private school boys from stable families due to the cut in the soft salary cap. What a crock. What an insult to all those players was backgrounds outside of private schools. What a load of classist stereotyping rubbish. I wish I could type this as I would speak it as it would Demonstrate the full force if my emotions in this.

The bloke is a classist racist moron.

There are so many things wrong with those comments from Simpson but aside from all the horrible parts of his thinking, the other thing that sticks out is how idiotic it is when it's not even the experience of their own club.

The most damaging person to the AFL this century was Ben Cousins. Middle class upbringing, went to an expensive school, parents well regarded in the community. Nearly destroyed their football club.

Nic Naitanui. Raised by a poor immigrant mother in a public housing estate, went to a government school, hung out with the sort of blokes who get neck tattoos. Has been a model club member and poster child for the club since the day he arrived.

It's not only only a horrible mindset for him to have, and you would hope there are ramifications for him saying this out loud, it's also really dumb. Imagine Gary Ablett Jr not getting drafted because his dad was a bit of a mess.

Didn’t Matt Rendell lose his job for saying something along these lines?

Simpson also reckons they could use two more medical staff, and yet he doesn’t suggest drafting fewer players with an injury history.

To be honest, I’m not even sure Simpson really means it. I think he’s just performing some version of having a sook and/or trying to hold the AFL hostage over money to pay his mates, but he doesn’t have the self-awareness to know how it will be read.

It’s not the worst part of all this, but West Coast are the richest club in the AFL. If they want a player, but are worried about their welfare then hire the welfare person and pay the bloody soft cap tax. They have more options than most in this situation.

They just suck.

They really do suck.

The best thing about this place, its a group of like minded people who immediately understand why what he said is so appalling and how it speaks to their underlying toxic way of doing things and how they think about the world.

But some from not around here maybe could do with some further explanation. Need journalists in this state to step up on this one. Simpson is cooked. Put a fork in him.

Well said Shane as the Ben Cousins example came to mind immediately after I heard this story. Furthermore to suggest that private school boys need less support is not only a broad brush but has also been shown to be a myth as there is often a reliance on external support which has been provided throughout their schooling.
Simpson should have been able to highlight the impact of soft funding caps without resorting to these ridiculous stereotypes. No surprise that it comes from a club that continually fails to hide its sense of entitlement.

I should be honest here and say that having attended a public school perhaps I’m not valuing the benefits of a private education highly enough.

To those who did go to a private school, can someone answer me the following: Did Daniel Kerr going to Aquinas College make him more or less likely to set houses on fire?

Or is it more a case of the number of fires being lit are the same, it’s just that they are better fires?

Or is it just that the networking opportunities mean you set fire to a better caliber of victim’s homes?

There’s just so much I don’t understand about private schools.

I was ready to jump on the bandwagon bashing the comments, but having listened to the podcast, it's hard to argue with what he was trying to say. The reality is that it can take a significant amount of resources to help bring people into an organisation and perform at the level required if they haven't been in that type of environment before. Depending on how you look at it, there are higher expectations on clubs to now look after people and not lose them out of the system. on one hand, that is an undoubtedly an honourable goal, on the other side, it means that clubs are less likely to look outside of the box which means that kids who could be ripper AFL players aren't even getting a chance. Sure the clubs spreadsheets and reports are looking good, but at what cost?

Straddo, it's the premise that private school lads with both parents represent less of a hassle compared to eighty percent of the community. Its bonkers.

It’s also a false choice.

The job of AFL clubs is to find talented players and spend their $6 million soft cap in a way that maximises that talent.

If Simpson wants to draft less talented kids because he doesn’t want to apportion enough of that $6 million to player welfare resources then good luck to him, I suppose.

I’d hope that savvy clubs will figure out the best approach is to get the most talented kids in, then put around them the support that specific group needs. If that’s dropping an assistant coach or video editor role in favour of welfare, then so be it. Perhaps it’s keeping more veterans on the list to act as mentors.

I think AFL coaches overvalue the role of coaching most of the time.
