The suns have truely been disappointing with player retention.
Unfortunately freo while better at retaining players has been poor since 2015. Maybe it coincides with our poor ladder position. I think ladder position is a good indicator of player retention.

I don't know if you've ever witnessed a game of footy at Georgetown Oval on Bass Straight with the wind-chill factor putting the temp at about -2 C and all of the players head-to-toe in icy mud so that the team colours are invisible and even the umpire is a mud-person up to the level of his chest, but they breed 'em tough down there and it'd be to their advantage to choose local as much as possible (ie players with thighs made for sloshing through mud-paddocks rather than ovals and heavy tracks generally).

There is a north-south divide that impacts where any Tassie team would be based. It's like having the distance between Perth and Freo the same as the distance between Perth and Bunbury (which I wish was the case.) I reckon a Tassie team will happen - even their Liberal premier is now making angry noises about not honouring the previous shonky deal done with Hawthorn and the AFL more generally.

Magoos, I hope your Perth to Bunbury distance is to the same scale as some umpires version of 15 meters for a mark, that would make it nearly far enough.

I think the issue with the Suns is they spent all thier money on Pies and forgot about the players.

The pies were part of Stuart Dew’s remuneration.

Gold Coast is a graveyard for every sport in Australia. I understand the AFL thinking they were big enough to get a foothold there, but even though they are not directly linked, it’s still pretty galling that Gold Coast has a team and Tassie doesn’t. If they were going to sink money into a team, I’d rather it be at a place where people appreciated it.

On the North / South thing, surely Taswegians understand that there is no chance each region gets a team so they can sort it out. Base the team in Hobart, but play 5 games in Hobart and 6 games a year in Launceston, so each side thinks they won. If East Freo and South Freo types can put their differences aside (mostly) to get a team in the AFL, surely Taswegians can.

There`s a danger a team from Tassie would develop a great culture and become a force, V\AFL wouldn't want that.

Because they want to share the lollies among the VFL clubs and only give interstate clubs a sniff every 5 years, there's a lot of Ex Suns and Gold Coast players been developed and now gone home to Victoria (to which the players are entitled, Lynch and Cameron ) 18 teams with 9 Interstate would also even up the fixture. The Cold Roast CEO ? Cochrane knows that all they are relied upon is a fixture to sell to TV and fill the Sunday night slot into Melbourne.

So the whole Gold Coast team is a scam to prop up Carlton?

Somebody needs to. The Australian tipped a bucket on Carlton today. (as though that was needed).

Never thought I'd see the da when Carlton became too left wing for The Australian.

Or do they still have a column about something other than who is too left wing?

My initial point was football teams are built on good decision making and strong cultures. Gold Coast is a wonderful place to live, they have everything going for them, but they didnt appoint good people managers in the key roles. Solution - more draft picks!

If more kids are going to pick up a football in Tasmania cause they have a team in the AFL than kids in Gold Coast then so be it. But these two teams were implemented to grow the game. I thought the issue was Tasmania has no growth upside, people go to an AFL game every two weeks already. And all the kids aleady kick a football.

Junior participation in Queensland is through the roof.

That means the AFL can afford to subsidise the team because there is a growth in interest, which they can sell to sponsors. Tasmania would be a net drain on the league. It would be nice for Tasmanians but it will mean the AFL will have to charge us more for water again, because Nat Fyfe is not taking a paycut to pay for it.
