Biz has Tucker on a wing, but also has Chapman, Young, Sturt and Frederick in the team, which makes me think he’s picked for the 2022 grand final as opposed to our best team right now.

When I first saw this post, I was thinking gee it feels like it's been years since we've had a "who's in the best 22" post. Then I gradually remembered all the years we've been out of contention and realised that it's been a constant conversation, albeit a fruitless and at times bitter one.

Anyway, I'm not sure its premiership material, but then again, stranger things have happened!

Backs: Wilson Hamling Ryan
Half Back: Logue Pearce Cox
Centre: Serong Brayshaw Acres
Half Forward: Mundy Treacy Frederick
Forward: Schultz Taberner Farmer, K (midseason draft pick up)
Ruck: Darcy Fyfe Cerra
Bench: Lobb Aish Young Chapman

Emergencies: Hughes Tucker Meek

You would genuinely pick Treacy, who has played three games without kicking a goal or getting near the footy, ahead of both Hughes and Tucker?

Do I think Treacy is more likely to kick 40+ goals a year than Hughes or Tucker as a key forward?

Yes.

Tucker is easily in our best team if fit. He's still building that fitness at the moment and is playing a half back role, a somewhat more attacking Conca role where he can actually use the footy. Without Ryan, Young and with Wilson woefully out of form, we haven't had good users coming out of defense and he's gone back to be an outlet. He's absolutely in my side on a wing pushing into the clearances.

There's a lot of younger blokes in my side based on their best rather than what they produce week in week out. Acres may be slightly more consistent but can't do the things that a Freddy can do. I also think our best side right now has a focus on the future and winning a premiership so the youth gets a leg up there too. That's unfortunate for someone like Stephen Hill who has had injuries cripple what he can do on the field as he's aged.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Thanks Slammo. I miss the competition in DFFL. I didn't offer much commentary with my team, but Wilson is in the gun, and Tucker/Hughes are up his clacker. Sturt is class, and Switta never does anything wrong, but Sturt on potential. Chapman great start but not best 22 in that backline. Cox CHF not ideal but my second choice would be Fyfe and that is even less ideal. And Acres should do more, but going ok, I'm backing him in.

Its interesting that most dont have Cox in the backline and one didnt have him in the side at all. It also shows how stalwarts like Hill, Colyer, Conca, Hughes and even Tucker would not be certain starts if we didnt have such an injury list. The Cox/Lobb/Treacy conundrum to assist Tabs and the Meek question, (to assist or not to assist) Hodor, remain JLos biggest picture selection problems, which if you listen to him carefully, he admits he hasnt yet sorted out in his own head yet.

Anyway, this is all just pie in the sky, as our injury list will no doubt ensure Freo remains an equal opportunity employer for all.

On Cox, I think his contested marking and footy smarts are a bit wasted in defence. He showed plenty as a very young key position forward and would always be a success when switched to the backline.

But I'd rather leave the defending to the athletic blokes that aren't as good at contested marking, forwards are far tougher to find. His kicking improved a lot as he got used to his forward role and even though he seems to want to play with Ryan in defence, his best position to help the side win games of footy is in the forwardline. Tabs only has a few years left so I'd be grooming Cox in preparation. Especially with Hamling/Pearce/Logue/Chapman in defence.

This should all come with the disclaimer, if our squad was fully fit and available!

For mine Hamling, Pearce and Cox are all key backs and we can’t play all three in the side anymore. I’d pick Cox before the other 2 so either Hamling or Pearce miss out.

I think goodsteve has given us the best of 1979. And its pretty good.

Someone will have to ring Dave Hollins and let him know he needs to get to the party.
