TOPIC: Roy

There's a nice little article on the AFL site here about the NAB Academy game this weekend featuring all of the top draft hopefuls this year.

It focuses on Jacob van Rooyen who trained with Freo a couple times a week for a month leading up to the academy game. He's a 195cm key forward who is a Freo fan and a likely top 10 selection (Freo fans look to populate a large portion of the top 10 picks this year with Jason Horne the likely number 1 who loves freo and wants to be the next Fyfe) if he continues the form he's produced so far. He's an exciting prospect and one to keep an eye on if there's a broadcast of the game (I haven't yet found one mentioned but I'm sure there'll be people recording it).
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I should also link to this article last week about Roy and his time at Freo trying to emulate Pav.

The squads for the game have been announced here as well as announcing a stream of the game at 8am Perth time tomorrow. It'll be the first time we've had a combined squad game in a long time so it's a great opportunity to see not only how the kids for the upcoming draft have developed in comparison to each other but how they fare against mature bodies (there are a lot of AFL listed players going up against them).

The West Aussies to look out for are:
19. Neil Erasmus - A big bodied midfielder who has started the colts season racking up big numbers, he's one who might be pushing the top 20 picks if he continues in this form.
22. Matthew Johnson - Another huge midfielder (191cm) who starred in the colts grand final last season as an under-ager. He's a good chance at a top 5 pick with all the tools; speed, size, skills and smarts. Coming off an injury interrupted pre-season, I don't think he'll get a lot of game time tomorrow.
23. Jacob van Rooyen - As mentioned earlier, a hard working tall forward who has great hands and a fantastic kick. Likely to be the first tall selected on draft day.
24. Rhett Bazzo - He's made the move to a KPF post and is playing well so far there. He may get minutes down back in this game but it'll be good to see him contesting balls against bigger bodies. He sits just behind Roy and Williams in the KPF stakes as he adjusts to the forwardline.
27. Jack Williams - Coming off a 5 goal haul last weekend, he's adjusting well to becoming a KPF who relieves the ruck. He's outside the top 10 picks at present but a performance against mature bodies could catapult him up a lot of draft boards.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

So..Biz...lets say we finish Top 8 (...and I think we will, btw) , what chance have we got of getting the young fella, or any of the others.

I sort of get lost with all the trading points stuff, but you & Gumnut seem to have a good handle on that stuff.

Lets say we finish 7th.... what sort of trading power will we have this year??

If we finished 7th we’d end up with pick 11, both Cripps and Merret are free agents this year so if they were to leave our pick would likely get pushed down to pick 13 (assuming both Carlton and the bombers finish below us on the ladder) from the above Roy would be long gone by then and we’d be hoping one of Williams or Bazzo was still available.

Long way to go until then though so not really worth thinking about at present.

I'm thinking, if we make top 8, which I think we will then our best chances of trading up to top 10 or 20 is with future picks or if someone seeks a trade home and we get a decent exchange. Looking at all these likely prospects though I think there's likely to be a fair amount of talented locals who may slide to our earlier picks. There are quite a few Eastern States prospects who will also take early picks who may be favoured ahead of the guys who we covet so much.

PK summed it up well. A pick around 10 is most likely but with compo picks, father sons (Daicos will go in the first few selections) and trading still to take place, it's difficult to guess. At the moment we have our 1st and 2nd round picks with nothing left after that.

Players on the edge of the top 10 are more likely to be available for us which probably includes all of those talls listed earlier.

Is Cerra staying? If he doesn’t we’d get top picks for him

Good call, The Colonel - last time I checked, I was 5'7", my wife 5'0'', and we're both shrinking. But honestly, their heads were just about touching the ceiling of the lift.

Maybe they were distorted by the angle you were at DD.

PP, I really hope Cerra stays. After losing Crozier, Neale, Langdon, and Hill in recent years I don't want to lose another player who walks into someone else's best 22.
