Fully agree, RM.

You can't blame the umpires for how crap we were but that doesn't absolve them from well earned criticism. They were blatantly one sided in that game but that isn't really out of the ordinary for the AFL. Eleni in particularly should never be allowed to umpire another game.

The big problem today is between the ears. We lose our direction when we travel and that is something that needs to be addressed by the off field staff. I'll needs to take another look at team selections because he's not getting too much right just now.

He also needs to look at this stupid habit we have of bombing it high when we have a short forward line. That's beyond stupid. His half time interview was underwhelming and he has improvement goals himself.

We were just crap today but we weren't alone, the maggots were equally as poor.

I always get worried when we get a good run with the umpires early in an away game, like we did today. It gets the crowd agitated and the noise starts to sway the umpires. There were a few calls made by the non-controlling ump that were textbook ‘noise of affirmation’ frees (assuming they exist).

But yeah, it probably didn’t affect the result.

We were rubbish today, but you expect that from time-to-time with young sides. I empathise with JLo and the match committee, because even though our team selections feel a bit rubbish, I’m not sure there’s much to choose from.

We’ve got a heap of people out, but if we had just one of Pearce, Hamling or Logue in defence, then Cox and Ryan don’t get so exposed. If we had just one of Fyfe or Lobb at the other end then Jones doesn’t get to coast around at his leisure all day.

For what it’s worth, I really like how Chapman worked his way into the game. He looked a bit off the pace early, but he really started to look comfortable.

I agree on Chapman, he has composure, and there is a bit of Johnno and Roger in his ability to find time.

Another thing I am not happy about, we copped another 2 match ending injuries to players from blatantly illegal acts that would have resulted in red cards in any other code. They are the 4th & 5th Freo players put out of the game in this fashion so far this year. (Banfield, Pearce, Fyfe, and todays 2) The umpires are supposed to be protecting the player going for the footy, I see them protecting some (Cripps got a bloody good ride with the wind today) but not others.

We have lost a quarter of our match day squad, if this happened to Vic club or the eagles, there would be rioting in the media boxes but given it's Freo, it's not worth a mention.

Funny that we blame umpires. I was sitting next to a squillion Blues supporters and you’d think they were hard done by. Maybe objectivity is a problem for passionate fans!!

As for the evidence that an earlier post suggested was required for why the umpires cost us the game ... just look at the game and the scoreboard ... the umpires didn’t make Carlton run faster, work harder, pass better, and kick TWICE our score. To think otherwise is to give umpires way too much credit for their influence and to provide our guys with a weak excuse. We were thrashed.
Based on GWS’s effort today we should be worried that last week was more about how bad they were than about getting carried away with our efforts. We had better improve quickly or it will be another wasted year.

So, do we cop the crook decisions because we are playing badly, or do we play badly because we cop the crook decisions?

Umps seemed a bit gun shy perevious weeks in front of goal
How was Ryan holding on more than the other dude?
And the son of sale of the century in the back nearly cost me a new tv
Curnow being hit from the grassy knoll
The only thing ressurected today was the need for the core vfl clubs to be relevant

Yeah, I always find it easy to blame the umpires when you're crap. Funnily enough there was no complaints about the umpiring last week.
Brisbane had a decision that ACTUALLY cost them a game and the AWFL even admitted it.
No amount of poor umpiring excuses the two losses we've had this year.
I'm more pissed off with our lack of skills, effort and desire.
Umpiring never really changes, but there are so many things with us that I thought were improving that aren't, that I find far more frustrating than umpires.

Yeah WtB, I'm starting to think that you pay as much attention to the game as you do when reading posts.

Nobody has claimed 'the umpires cost us the game'. Nobody.

What has been said, repeatedly, was that we were crap and so were the umpires. If you want to criticise people for saying that, then maybe you could include why there were different interpretations being made all day with some truly bizarre decisions being made.

No they didn't 'cost us the game' but they certainly had an influence on the way the game went.

We were crap. We were disorganised, played stupid football, had poor team selections and utterly incomprehensible tactics right out of the old Roly days. Kick it high to a bunch of opposition talls when the team has gone in short. The game was lost in the coaches box before we set foot on the ground.

That doesn't mean the umpires were anything but s***. You cannot spin that in any other way.

Five of Carltoons first six goals came from our defensive stuff-ups. The game was only going one way after that - Hayden Young going off at the main break was a blessing in some ways - Chappy was really good for most of the afternoon; Tabs was moronic and Brayshaw was well tagged.

Other than that the whole long ball to nowhere is bloody frustrating to watch bounce back the other way.

The high bomb to the forward line was absolutely insane.

We went in short and we still bombed it high all game. That never changed.

If you want to use that tactic going in with only four talls and leaving talls out of the team is sheer lunacy. I have no idea why JLo didn't jump on that from the start but nothing changed. They were all doing it, including Walters who knows better.

Jones took 9 or 10 intercept marks practically unopposed. It's like the 'good old days' when we spoonfed McGovern and his scummy mates by bombing it in high with a short forward line.

I'm starting to think we don't pack any brains when we travel.

You're harsh on Tabs though. He was being double teamed most of the day and the holding going on off the ball was never going to allow him to impact on the game. He kicked two in a poor side and If he does that most games, he's an automatic choice.

McKay was made to look like a goal kicking machine from a pathetic and weak effort by many Freo players all over the ground.

Today was an embarrassment and exposed the lack of leadership we have in our list.

Older and experienced players like Colyer, Conca, Acres, Aish and Wilson need to understand they have a bigger role than just playing their own position, and leaving the really hard work up to Mundy, Walters and young Andy Brayshaw.
