I hope they bring both Treacy and Sturt in next week to give the forward line some chance.

Sox
Watched the game live. A few observations:
i: it was easy to tell when we would play well and when we wouldn’t before the ball was bounced/thrown in and it was all about spread. When we let Carlton compress the ground they outmuscled us and the forwards blocked for each other beautifully. When we held our structure wide we could run and kick to free men. I never saw an exception to this. When freo were wide, we scored. Freo were rarely wide.
ii: Cerra needs to bulk up. As is, Cerra, Brayshaw and Serong are fast, clever and clean but get outmuscled WAY too easily. Mundy tried to play the Fyfe-strength role but it doesn’t work. And Acres is worse. We need muscle in the midfield - Cerra can be the answer.
iii: the umpires could really step up and have a 10 goal game if they kicked a little straighter. Need some goal kicking practice.
iv: we looked better in the midfield when Darcy went in.
v: tabs, darcy and meek all concede position in marking contests way too easily. Need to attack the ball or, more likely, get out of the forward line. Treacy might be handy, but we’d do just as well with Tabs going solo and Schultz being the other tall target - he’s bring it to ground more often than the rucks could.
vi: our forward need to learn how to block for each other. I know this line-up of forwards hasn’t played much together - it’s obvious from watching. They know they’re “role” and what the play is but they don’t do the little things for each other. If a freo forward wants space from their opponent, they have to sprint for it and hope on the kick.

Also at the game Sox and have to agree with most of your points, especially our talls being out positioned in marking contests.
Darcy’s tap work is excellent but he is a slug around the ground.
Anyone looking at umpiring/free kick stats is missing the point - we were whipped.
We seemed incredibly slow, which is a surprise after last week. Switkowski was that only player out there who seemed to show some toe.
Carlton went hard at Brayshaw. They clearly decided he was the initiator of our movement (especially in Fyfe’s absence).
We seemed undersized and outmuscled - Giro, Cerra, Schultz, Switkowski, Henry, Young, etc were easily moved off the ball.
Luke Ryan is well below his best ... not sure if he is injured?
Tabs needs some marking support. Darcy is not working in that role.

Shane - even Dwayne couldn’t convince me to watch a second of that game again.

You say that but I bet you'll catch a few lines from him mispronouncing names on the news and you'll be hooked straight into the full game.

Cos they are umpiring with guess work and no professionalism which I found is severely lacking.

She's always been useless. Don't please don't let her umpire senior all games.

Outmuscled was right. The strength factor was missing for Freo. They seemed to be knocked down , pushed out don't mention the tackles they couldn't hold.

I get the “anytime, anyone, anywhere” mantra, but would anyone in AFL fixturing say “We’ve got the home team team on 10 days break who have been at home every week vs an away team coming off a 7 day break who’ve had to fly 3 days in the past fortnight-odd. Might that be a little, um, unfair? Could we have sorted that out a bit better?”.

Guess not.

Sometimes I want to, using a step ladder, slap Blake Acres and tell him to go out and be Patrick Cripps.

How many marks would McKay have taken if the "blocking" rule was adjudicated against Betts the way it was against Freo? How many marks would the Freo forwards have taken under the same rules?

As for Carlton easily breaking tackles, they didn't break to many early, but were allowed to take their time disposing of the footy, illegally or legally. Why was no comment made by the idiots in the commentary box about Schultz's injury, they replayed Walters attempted bump about 40 times in an attempt to hang him, and as for the inconsistency around the frees awarded to Cripps versus the play on and ball up decisions when Freo players were ridden into the ground, words fail me. (although they didn't at the time, notwithstanding none of those are repeatable here.)
Its easy to say the umpires had no effect on the result, but harder to back that up with evidence.
