TOPIC: Carlton v Freo

January 2021, "we've got Pearce, Logue, Hamling, Cox, Ryan and this guy we just drafted from West Perth looks good and he's a defender. We just can't fit them all in, who misses out?"

April 2021, "when is the mid season draft, we need defenders".

Our name is Fremantle, say our name!

Our injury list is an embarrassment of riches.

Inter club practice is good for ball moment and skills but no good for hard body contact .

Other teams hit hard and try to put players off there game , even hurt players as much as they can . We need to give it back , get harder at every contest .

Being a young team makes this a bit difficult being smaller bodies , it will come if we can keep a team on the park .

I was saying it October, hypen. We didn't need defenders because the blokes who have never been fit were going to suddenly become fit.

I've had more than a few words to say over the umpiring in recent years, but in this case, focusing on a couple of judgement calls made by the umps that could have gone either way is missing the point.

Freo is in real trouble and we dont seem to have a gameplan aside from "Bomb it in long". It's the same game plan we've had for a decade. Round 2 reminded me of 2015, where pressure around the ground and repeat entries got us off to a great start before we fell over in the second half of the season. Fast forward to 2021 and with the injury list we've got we couldn't maintain that form for 2 weeks let alone a whole season.

Where i see possibilities with this game style is in running a forward line with 3 genuine talls* eg Treacy, Tabs and one of Meek/Darcy with guys like Schultz, Frederick and Walters running around and crumbing. What i don't understand is why we don't have an effective plan B for situations where the tall timber either isn't available or is getting outplayed. eg player positioning to make space for a player to run into and take a mark rather than "bomb and pray"

It's a bit circular but based on this seasons games to date, my immediate focus would be on developing kicking skills (which are so poor I imagine its why we've stuck with "bomb if long" year after year) and then drill players on more effective player positioning to take advantage of the new skills.

It might sound strange, but I'd rather watch us getting beaten trying out a new skills based playing style and getting it wrong vs getting beaten by continuing the kick it long and pray it doesn't come back over our heads style that we've stuck with unsuccessfully for so long.

*Note - it helps if you've got a power forward** in your list of talls not relying on 3 players with 93 games AFL experience between them who've never played a game together.

**I think Tabs is a good forward, but he doesnt have the size or presence to be what I consider a power forward.***

*** Power forward is a subjective measurement, although the AFL and champion data probably have an algorithm to try and quantify it.

WtB, I think it's very clear that the inconsistent umpiring was a significant factor in the game but perhaps you should also have read the rest of people's comments where they made clear that we played poorly.

We used Roly's tactics too much, didn't select the right players, went in too short and played like we were all 9 foot tall and we didn't react and change anything until late in the final quarter.

It's got nothing to do with bias, although yesterday there was a clear bias. It's also clear that some teams /players get a free ride that others don't. Until the inconsistencies are addressed, the umpires will always be a factor in how games pan out.

Witness the number of free kicks given to Carlton inside their forward 50 for things like holding when none were given to Freo at the other end. Even when Tabs was being held by Weitering and others, the call was always play on.

Does that mean we weren't crap? No, because we were and everybody has said that. Maybe read all the comments and not just continually have a go at people because you have a bug in your ear about something.

Straddo, I don't think the hits on Schultz & Young where judgement calls that could have gone either way, they were blatant acts of thuggery.

RM, you might have addressed your last post to me out of force of habit. Whilst understandable, I think on this occasion your issue is with Walter.

Straddo, fully agree that our only option is the long bomb. It was stupid when Roly did it and it is still stupid now, especially when we lack talls.

We have lost 10, 11 ?? games in a row to the slime because our game plan under Roly was to kick it to McGovern, Hurn, Glass (we've been doing it that long) Yesterday, our game plan seemed to be to kick it to Jones. Seriously, who allows somebody to take 9 or 10 intercept marks and not react to that in any way, shape or form.

I said it earlier and it's worth repeating, that game was lost before we went onto the ground. We went in too short and left a tall marking forward in the stands. We did not react to anything until late in the last quarter, the players had no idea out there yesterday because they weren't properly prepared and we did stupid things.

One of our leaders in Walters was as bad as anybody. His first 2? 3? disposals were high bombs to a Carlton player. It's hard to aim too much criticism at the youngsters when a bloke with that much experience was doing that.

Agree on Tabs. He's never been a power forward. He would be ideal playing alongside one though but perhaps next time we sell the farm for a strong marking forward, we don't delist them 5 minutes later.

Sorry Morgan, WTB I should have been talking to you.

Habits can be hard to break, Morgan, as many on these forums have noted from time to time on many wide and varied subjects.

We have Duman playing for Peel Thunder so we do have a spare defender not playing for Freo. But I guess you have to play Chapman at some stage.

As for Taberner not being big enough, the guy is 199cm & 98kg. Pavlich was 192cm & 99kg. But it is clear that you need 2 power forwards. Slime & Sydney have 3 in their sides.

OK, playing Darcy in the forward line was an experiment that failed, fair enough. If he plays there next week, there is a serious question over Longmuir's coaching ability. Meek was a more mobile CHF option in that game, especially when he was getting beaten in the ruck.

It's obvious Treacy or Sturt (or both) have to play. The side doesn't need Walters, Schultz, Switkowski, Colyer & Frederick all playing in the forward line, that is ridiculously small.

Henry as the sub gave a little bit but again we were just subbing one small for another and he was far too light to tackle and compete for contested ball. At least Schultz goes in and tackles hard.

Maybe we need a defender in the forward line to offset the intercepting marker... Cox?
But I think we have an opportunity to correct the forward line with both Sturt and Treacy available.
I'm not sold on Henry just yet, so maybe he can remain as a sub going forward.
So this week I'd like to see in:
Fyfe,
Sturt,
Treacy
Not sure who goes out?

I’m glad we’re in agreement that the umpiring wasn’t responsible for that loss.
