Some perspective: for years a lacklustre management held us back, with poor decisions made around the retention of Their Man on a cripplingly exorbitant five year coaching extension.
That said, there is an underlying systematic problem with injuries. Weber having departed, then something else is happening, possibly the Cockburn pitch, a work in progress that leaves us clearly off the pace and behind other teams.

It is still possible to be optimistic and see sunny uplands. We see genuine talent in the team, and most players including some maligned scapegoats-in-waiting gave it a red hot crack. Could have been a 10 goal walloping. Melbourne have a decent system, they will win a few as they usually do, early in the season. I'm sticking with the sunny uplands mantra for now.

Watching us yesterday was like having two pair of tight undies on, very uncomfortable and only gets worse as time goes on.

I’m looking forward to the Boxer short revival where life is a breeze.

I did miss Q1 due to usual Saturday morning commitments. Probably a blessing.

Longest list of injuries in the AFL ,players underdone, poor skills , poor kicking for goal , poor decision making ..... looks like we had a very poor preseason

Very good point about the preseason being poor. maybe it was simply the coverage of what was going on , but their seemed to be a lot more down time than normal. Lost a week due to COVID , then they had a 4 day break, a lot of trips to community groups, 3 weeks Christmas break etc .

Maybe given their age profile they backed off to AVOID injuries!

It would be nice if the forwards could lead to different spots, instead if all leading to the same spot and getting in each others way. I think they need a lot more practice.

Doesn't matter what spot they lead too, when 2 or 3 blokes are hanging off them when they're there.

Even Pavlich struggled when tripled, and we ain't got no Pavliches.

Watched a few games this weekend. Freo were the best worst. I don't know what cavalry we have, but can't see Walters and Lobb lifting the woeful skills all round.

We clearly got beaten in the forward line ,we simply got killed in the air , these are the players we got rid of before the draft: Hogan, H. Dixon, Mc Carthy , D.O’Reilly....replaced by Tracey...Taberner clearly underdone or poor preseason, needed depth in the ruckman department but hasn’t been addressed in the draft .... injuries did the rest.... can’t see many other forward targets but plain simple poor planning.

Several of our injuries have come in the past couple of weeks, so team on Saturday was quite different from the one that was gelling in pre-season via match sim and the first scratchie against weagles. Longmuir said in his Q&A that 5 of the 6 forwards that were planned on were not in this team. Not sure of his numbers, but that would make a huge difference given that decision-making in the modern, fast game must be mostly reflex...

I agree Purplepower. The idea of taking the best possible in the draft no matter where they play is ridiculous. Considering most of the high picks are midfielders that is never going to work. Consequently you end up with us having way too many defenders, good midfield depth but a big lack of forward options. Then throw in injuries and we find ourselves where we are before the season has really started.
Okay, I understand Hogan was too much trouble for us, O'Reilly had shown no real potential and Dixon didn't ever get the hang of being fit and prepared, but McCarthy played some good games for us when he was the only key forward we had due to injuries (we still haven't learned have we). We then decided to make him into a wingman for one game, which we didn't really need, and then ditched him

It’s absolutely incredulous the poor planning of player selection in the draft. This is something that has been going on since 2010. We initially had this obsession with midfielders picking upto 7 mids in one draft and then delisting I think three of them the following year. Yes around 2013.
We now have this obsession with NGA KIDS and I can’t think of one of them that has even a modicum of success. Early days I know.

But longmuir talked about the need for a second ruck forward before the draft and we pick up a 193 cm rookie forward. Yes he kicked 7 goals in a practice game granted but was close to non existent in the scratch match in the official preseason game. Yes extremely early days but he will not be our saviour. We apparently had no interest in another ruckman on our list but instead draft 2 apparently NGA Smalls ( early days again) but we have an abundance of these smalls. Or are we saying we stuffed up our original pick of smalls and we need to pick up some more smalls to make up for our earlier mistakes. What a shambles it appears to be. Let alone the 2 draft picks for hogan.
They simply cannot get enough decisions correct. In fact given the number of people the club employs to get this right their success rate is well below other AFL clubs.
We have these clean outs and their is always new hope, I wish I knew the answer. Peter bell has been hardly successful so far? Got rid of Webber replaced with what? Traded in hogan ? Nice personable bloke I am sure but was he the best around.
Longmuir talks the language about love and friendship and culture yet the very basics we’re missing on Saturday. All the best planning will go astray if you can’t do a simple kick to a fellow player. And all the training is if no use if you don’t have the common sense to not kick it high to a small forward being guarded by a tall defender. Just plain dumb.

To put this game in a bit more perspective I would remind everyone that the MCG has always been a graveyard for Fremantle teams even when we were riding high I can remember getting thrashed by Melbourne and Richmond particularly. I am sure that if that game had of been played at Optus here the result would have been very different. I would expect a huge improvement this week.

Yes you make a good point about Melbourne been a grave yard. But can’t we expect that we do the basics properly even if we lose being undermanned.
Surely we can be mid pack for injuries as opposed to being near the top year after year.
Can’t we hope that after 5 years of misery that we can beat a team like Melbourne. The score line flattered us , it could easily of been a real drubbing thank goodness it was only Melbourne.

One opening game at the MCG doesnt make a season, I will reserve my judgement until the end of the GWS game this week.
