As mentioned earlier I was at the game and, based on the home crowd reaction, you would think Freo were being heavily favoured by the ump. Then you come onto Dockerland and you hear the the umps were pro Melbourne ... perhaps it’s the fans that are one eyed not the umps.

One umpiring thing that did give me the irrits and soured the game was the difficulty that they had in ruling the standing in the mark rule. It’s a tough one for them because they have to watch the player in the mark to ensure they remain in place while also watching the player kicking the ball to see if they deviate from a straight line. I felt that they were very slow in calling play on when the kicker moved off line which made a nonsense of the rule. But at least they did it both ways.

They were supposed to be doing that before the rule change, to see if he crossed the mark.

Some of them haven't havent been practising their haircuts at all. Looking like a rabble compounds the impression.

I was at the game too wtb and know what you mean about the umps. Actually umping looked pretty fair from my vantage point. The exception I remember was the first 50m penatly, when our player (who was it?) got called for being in the exclusion zone when the ump blew the whistle for the mark.

On the STAND call, my son said that for an out on the full free, the player on the mark has to have one foot on the boundary line. Can anyone confirm this?

I can’t confirm that, however, it would only make sense if the kicker had to stay outside the boundary line.

Overall Im not 100% against the stand rule but it does make the man on the mark look like an absolute goose.

I only thought there was one howler committed against us. Blakely received a high fend off, and completed a tackle without correct disposal. Blakely was left dealing with the affects of this high fend off and received no free for either.
Other than that I’ve watched all games this weekend and we have clearly been the worst team I’ve watched.

Where are all the Ross Lyon haters now?

Larkin was right all along. The moon landings were faked.

It is so sad that our skill level is still below the rest of the opposition. Hamling , Pearce , conca , Toby all kick the ball at below AFL standard. I saw a passage of play where we kept kicking it to each other and each kick just missed the target and a simple Mark was instead a pick up fumble which resulted in less time to dispose of the ball and eventually a kick to a contest.
It is incredulous that we are still picking too many players on effort. Also our footy smarts dexterity when the ball is on the ground is not even at wafl standard. Too many times our small forwards were not able to half a contest or the ball slips out , comes of our knee etc and falls to the opposition. There was one passage where conca just ran the ball out , no thought to getting it and handballing onto the oppositions foot to go out on the full.. Our footy smarts are just not their.
I really thought we were making progress but we have gone backwards at the basics. Liam Henry pick I thought was going to cost us with the points we gave up, but thankfully Chapman will be great and if he is not already in front of Toby Watson I will go heave ho.
This is not about putting the boots in, but seriously we did not pick the best side yesterday. Even a 3/4 fit Taylor duman is better than some of our defenders with ball in hand. Alex Pearce as a forward was simply dumb, truely dumb, the guy can’t kick straight and I ove him as a mobile , dexterity elite as a backman who can half a contest. He is a backman more than cox. The press around cox is amazing I am watching the wrong player obviously. Yeah has played some good games on below par opposition forwards but anyone of note he gets pantsed.

You missed Fyfe and Walters, exceed.

I'll help. Fyfe - one paced and can't take a contested mark over Max Gawn.

Walters, well I'm just really angry we lost...

If Fyfe can't take a mark in the forward fifty you're simply starving Peter without paying anything to Paul.

In work and life i like to start small, build organically from a low base.
We got whacked but things get better from here.
Get games into Henry, Young and co.
The defence will settle and Ryan will find his fitness
Cavalry will arrive before long.
Game style will change to suit our smalls (already happening)
Of course those shelling out for a years membership based on hope and fresh slogans will want to be moving quickly of the RoLy era doldrums, but at least let us take out a timely quote:

Its never as bad, or as good, as you think it is.

"Its never as bad, or as good, as you think is" is an expression that makes a lot of assumptions.

I seem to remember a former coach of ours saying that - usually when things were really bad.

Well, I assume then that that effort yesterday was not as bad as we thought it was, even though it looked bloody woeful.
