Totally agree that Cox was an obvious replacement in the forward line he played 36 games mostly in defence and 27 goals...

You know I've been sitting here quietly reflecting on today with a cold beer. It just occurred to me that this is how the victims of those tele email scammers must feel. Then it occurred to me that I am a victim of one of those dating scams.

You get this phone call from this "amazing football club" that tell you" they love you" and you are really cool and great. They send you nice pictures of themselves to you and tell you how good you make them feel. Then the next call is asking for some money, and cause you are in love you send them some to help them out.

For some stupid reason I keep falling for the same damn scam every year and I always end up with a broken heart.

I should just stick with beer.

The forward line has been a problem for about ..ever.

We have recruited about 16 backmen and have two bona fide forwards in Tabs and Walters. With secondary players like Watson, Duman, Hughes, Concha, Logue and Thomas all capable of being developed in defence to join Hamling, Cox and co, its time to think totally outside the box and play our quality players in the forward line. Im talking about Nathan Wilson, Hayden Young, Heath Chapman and particularly Luke Ryan.

I know the argument, Ryan won all Australian at half back but half backs are dime a dozen, particularly at Freo and Ryan is footy smart, tough, fast, agile, good overhead, reads the play and a great kick. He would make a perfect half forward. Develop him and say a Chapman to complement Tabs in the air, then the Sturts, Henrys, Fredericks, Walters and Schultzs will come into play.

Ryan forward is the key move.

It wont happen of course, because for some reason, Freo has a philosophy of playing their best players in defence.
If they dont use Ryan then it will have to be Cox, regardless of his views of playing forward. Hes not that good down back to warrant the coach listening to his views about where he wants to play.

Can someone tell me why we were playing away today. I thought we rotated this with the Slime. We played away for like 6 months to start last month. It makes a difference for a young team. No travel, familiar surrounds. Remember that North Melbourne game 3 seasons ago. Last time I remember us playing at home in round 1.

And no to Ryan forward. He is an interceptor. Play players where they have a gift.

I am surprised at the comments on Henry. He's not Sonson by any stretch, but he looked genuinely dangerous out there.
I didn't realise just how much I like Aish until today.
Fyfe's ability to hold the ball and get the disposal away at just the right time is amazing.
The rest of our mids were all excellent.
Young is a class act.
Clayton Oliver is one tough cookie.
It was nice to give Watson a run, but Duman would have been better.
Anybody looks good as the defensive intercept marking person - but actually manning up on an opponent is harder - as Cox and Ryan found out today.
Umpiring wasn't disgraceful, but had the typical level of hometown bias.
Sometimes you have games where the ball just doesn't bounce for you - and today was one of those. At Optus we would have beaten them.

Observationally, watching lots of different sports, there are people who are natural forwards / attackers etc and there are natural defenders / backs.

It is just the way people are wired. So play the backs in the back and play the forwards up front where they belong FFS.

Our issue is we have no real ready to play now natural forwards apart from Son Son with the built in radar. Tabs, I just can not work out, he seems to be best taking a mark on the wing and running off players back into the forward line. So he might be our true CHF, but Def not the lead from the goal square type. That might explain why Lobb and he work well together. After watching Peel today, we may have another. Lord knows how we will keep him from getting suspended twice a season, but I guess we will see in 4 weeks time. The other small forwards we played today just either lacked the radar - might have been a bad day in the office, or lacked the confidence to do what Brayshaw did on the run and just put the ball between the big sticks!

My concern is that many of the posts here put in more effort than our players.

We were rubbish today. A disgrace. Any excuse is inexcusable.

We were rubbish and Longuire has a lot of work to do

Who's Longuire?

Back to the subject, I think we looked worse than we really are.

We don't have much in the way of KPP depth, which really hurts us when we have an injury list that reads like War and Peace (especially the War bit) We've had a disrupted preseason, particularly so when out 'proposed' normal combinations just haven't been able to train together.

I'm not suggeszting that factors like these excuse a poor performance, they don't but failing to acknowledge the effect these things can have on the team is just ignoring reality.

We have the basics in place apart from some holes in our list and we are progressing in probably the right direction or at least in a better direction than we were previously. I still think that we will be much better at the end of this season that we are at the beginning

I for one was terribly disappointed with the haircuts.

Fyfe and Watson need to take a good long hard look at themselves.
