TOPIC: Puzzling

The AFL doesn’t do itself any favours when its own staff writers come up with Vic centric articles such as the piece that can currently be found on its web site under “round 5: Finals fancies face off.”
My obvious first thought was that the article would relate to Freo (first on the ladder) vs Brissie (third on the ladder and a very high percentage). But no, it is about Collingwood (2nd) vs Melb (5th). The opening para sets the scene
“COLLINGWOOD and Melbourne will have the chance to stamp their authority as the favourite for the 2021 NAB AFL Women's premiership when the two teams face off at Victoria Park on Sunday.”
Stamp their authority!!! Favourites!!!!
But it gets worse!!!
“The Magpies surged to the top of the ladder with a stunning victory over North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night”. ..... well guess what ... Fremantle are actually top of the ladder!!

After mentioning most other games in Round 5, Freo vs Brissie get the following coverage:
“The Western Bulldogs will host Greater Western Sydney at VU Whitten Oval in Saturday's first game, followed by a potential finals-shaping clash in the west when Brisbane travels to take on undefeated Fremantle. “ ... that’s it, nothing more ...

“...finals shaping”!!!! How disrespectful of both Fremantle and Brisbane. I hope Trent sees this and pins it up on the wall!

I’ll stop now as I’ve run out of exclamation marks.

After that other post, maybe they have inside information about how the grand final will go.

WTB, try and find a mention of Freo in this article in "Eagles Newsletter" by esteemed sports reporter Shane Hope.

Frewho

If our local media don't rate Freo, no-one else will, but they will be sorry about that.

That point a coach makes about teams starting to get their game and fitness together is being borne out by the North Melbourne result. Any team that doesn't bring their A game for four quarters is getting found out.
That said I could find no mention of the game on Aunty, it appears they didn't have anyone at the game, so keep posting your game summaries Dockerlanders

The Vic-bias in AFLW coverage - particularly on the AFLW site - has been worse than the men's a lot of the time. It's as though, in their efforts to stage-manage the AFLW into existence, the AFL think that the women's league hasn't 'arrived' until the main traditional Vic clubs are replicating their domination in it. The AFL no doubt want those large Vic club fan-bases to get on board with AFLW, (but then is there enough female players in Victoria to have that many competitive AFLW sides?)

But - it leaves the Freo women with something to prove, and it makes the rest of the league complacent about us - so let's just go on and win the GF and have the last laugh.

It gets worse. I nearly spat my weeties out this morning when channel eagle mentioned 2 huge AWFL games coming up in Perth this weekend.

I mean I get the winless Suns verses the winless coasters but I could find the other game for the life of me.

It's even worse if you live here in Melbourne, as I now do. Not even a mention of the Dockers-Suns result in the Sunday Age.
Notice, too, that the Fox calls for the non-Vic games are now done from their Melbourne studio with a local boundary rider linked in. So not only are (former?) interstate Fox staff such as Pav and Lynch missing out, but they're bringing in current players (Molloy, Huntington, Blackburn) exclusively from Vic teams, so the interstate girls are missing out on the media experience.

I read the AFL article and thought the exact same thing. Absolute disrespect to Freo and what we've achieved. We're undefeated for effectively 2 years and playing the best football around. The least they could do is build up the clash between the top side and third. But nope, just a passing mention in the second half of a sentence late in the article.

The Vic bias is deafening and I hope the girls are taking note and using it as motivation each week.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

The article now reads:

"COLLINGWOOD and Melbourne will have the chance to stamp their authority as one of the favourites for the 2021 NAB AFL Women's premiership when the two teams face off at Victoria Park on Sunday.

The Magpies surged to second on the ladder with a stunning victory over North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, while the Demons won all of their first three games to sit firmly inside the competition's top four ahead of their round four clash with the Western Bulldogs."

I think 'Staff Writers' just got a little excited in trying to pump up next week's fixture.

Just so you know Shane, Raglan Matt has linked to a (purported) news organisation above. I'd be careful about allowing this sort of thing on Dockerland, as you might get a knock on the door from the Feds demanding that you divvy up some cash to Kerry and Rupert...

The WA sports media wouldn't want to start speculatively invoicing this place. I'll reciprocate.
