Following the AFL/VFL rule change, which stops the man on the mark from moving more than 1 metre, has there been any clarification/definition of what constitutes ‘standing the mark’. As an example, what happens if a player decides not to stand on the mark but instead stands 2, 5 or 10 metres further back. Are they then free to ignore the new rule and run anywhere they want without the new restriction? If so, why would anyone bother to stand the mark and be locked into place?

I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but isn’t it easier for an umpire to determine whether a player moves from a specific spot than the former approach of trying to determine when a player on the mark crossed an imaginary semi-circle radius around that spot?

I just see it as yet another excuse to award a fifty metre penalty - to boost the scoring. Who would miss lining up for a goal kick from five metres directly in front? Ok, who besides Tabs that is?

I just think that they're not looking at penalising the man standing the mark but rather looking at ways to ensure the kicker actually gets a goal and not yet another (and another) point behind. That's what's driving this.
