TOPIC: Hogan going to GWS

Reading theWest rag this morning about who we could have had with picks 6 & 23 back in 2018 makes me spew...

"Pick six of the 2018 draft was eventually used by Gold Coast to snap up exciting prodigy Ben King, while WA’s Ian ‘Bobby’ Hill was still available when pick 23 came up."

FWIW, I'm just not comfortable with the level or hint of Peter Bell bashing re: trading Hogan in and now trading Hogan out. As far as we're aware, Bell wasn't keen on the trade-in to begin with (remember, he balked at first; others were dead set keen; you know who they are, they left last year), and now for the trade-out, we'll get the best deal possible.

What did you want Belly to do at the time? Resign when he was 'overruled'?

And, BTW, themagoo's post re: Jesse and his posse was 100% spot on.

Hope Bell can secure 43 and 51 from GWS for Hogan but sadly that might be a bridge too far. We'll be lucky to get 51 and it will be a lotto win if we get 43!!
Talk again of pick 12 for Jordan Clark.

It is a colossal stuff up by Bell any way you look at it. He's the man who organised our trades and managed the list over this period and is the person responsible for trading for Hogan then and now. He was very wrong on at least one of those occasions if not both. I hope he has some high picks in his sights from GWS.

For mine, Hogan's off field issues have been blown far out of proportion by a media baying for blood and exacerbated by his injury issues that have seen supporters lose sight of how highly valued & talented he should be & is. He took some time off earlier this year to deal with personal issues and had a girl at his house after a long stint on his own, they're hardly huge problems.

The only other problem was rocking up to training in an unfit state and copping a ban as a result but as a 23yo kid who had been through a lot, some understanding and honest conversations are a lot better way to deal with his problems. I don't think the people we had in charge (RL and co) were any good for him and the trouble he faced.

Losing him will be huge for the club and our prospects of a flag in the next few years. We have little in the cupboard to replace him up forward with all our eggs now in the 'Tabs staying fit' basket. Our only other option is Cox moving back forward (which is where I like him) but that also relies on our often injured defenders staying fit.

I don't see the draft answering these questions given our position in it. We might be shooting ourselves in the foot pretty badly here.

The really sad part is, he wanted to play for us. He wanted to lead us to success. I hope he kicks bags for the Giants. From Hogan:

I wish I was able to contribute a lot more to the football club than I have in my time here.
You will not know how disappointed I am that it didn’t work out the way I hoped it would when I got to come to the Dockers.
For that I’m sorry, but I leave a team that is on the way up and I wish you all success in the future.”
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Ignoring the issues you talk of Bizkit and labelling them minor is not too far different from the behaviour many of us criticised Worsfold for in the Cousins era.

His off field stuff wasn't just injury, he took a load of personal time as well.

Whilst clubs have a duty of care, often well beyond what is expected of many employers, they should not be expected to do social work.

If Bell stuffed up in reading Hogan's personal situation, then Hogan has also failed to live up to his end of the bargain. You don't get given exactly what you want, then not put in and do the right thing. We're not privy to his whole situation, but clearly freo are cutting losses early ,deeming him not worth the cost.

If Freo keep pandering to difficult players believing you really need them, then you go back to the tail wagging the dog, which ironically Bell was accused of being part of during Connolly's tenure. Such manipulations and preferential treatment also pisses off a whole cohort of other players.

Besides, even when fit he hardly set the game on fire. Let go of the messiah complexes already.

Just as comparison. Dustin Martin was a handful, but Richmond stuck with him and have reaped the rewards. Liam Ryan at WC-same. Hunter-WB. Stepenson-Coll. Greene-GWS. We have now managed to get rid of not one but two forwards in one year. A year when we once again struggled to kick goals, leaving us in a worse situation than we already were.
We treat it like a fire sale.

Two parts to a deal and unfortunately the club and supporters lost out again.

Sure, issues and problems will always arise in an AFL club, but hopefully we’re now over our nurse Betty social work era of taking on players with known issues outside the bell curve.

All the best to Hogan, I hope he makes something of the talent he’s got.

I wish Hogan had worked out. He's exactly the player we need. But I trust bell and longmuir to create the culture we need.

Sometimes I think people here are more interested in having a dig at Freo heriarchy than actually supporting the club.

To all those Peter Bell bashers it's worth mentioning, and I've done it once before, our list manager at the time of Jesse's acquisition was a guy named Mark Micallef who has since been ditched and replaced by David Walls(son of Robert). It may have been Belly who negotiated the final deal, against his better judgment, but surely Mr. Micallef, Ross Lyon and others should bear the larger part of the blame for the Jesse deal.
This year JLo, Belly and David Walls seem to be getting things right and making the tough but necessary decisions relating to list managmemt and club culture along with Simon Garlick who was part of a similar culture shift at the Bulldogs leading up to their most recent Premiership.

Personally, I see club hierarchy and administration and supporting the club as two completely separate entities.

When you give up big picks for Bennell, McCarthy, Hogan and Hill for basically no return then I would expect any club to be answerable for that.
When you delist players like De Boer, Barlow, Collins, Menegola and McCarthy without any picks or trades I would expect any club to be answerable for that.
When you use your top draft pick on players like Simpson, Pitt, Apeness, and Sheridan I would expect any club to be answerable for that.

If we want to be seen as a professional, go to club, you need to be well lead. It starts at the top and it certainly doesn't mean we don't support the club because we aren't happy with the way some things are done.
