TOPIC: Hogan going to GWS

To me, taking responsibility would have been making the most of the deals they'd already done and making sure not to repeat the same mistakes, not simply undoing the mistake and starting again with a clean slate.

Wasting money and resources and then dropping your head to throw out apology wave isn't a professional standard.

Let me put it to you:
Do you think Peter Bell should be sacked for incompetence? Y/N
(and as an aside do you think Daniel Andrews should be sacked for incompetence?) Y/N

Neither is going public with whatever Hogan's private thing (or things) may be that have contributed to him not reaching whatever potential the footy club saw in him.

If Hogan suffers from night terrors and doesn't sleep well away from home without his blankie, that really doesn't change the current outcome and if the club went public with that embarrassing explanation, I'd be fairly disappointed.

This is Perth, we'll all hear from someone's cousin's dog walker's mechanic's hairdresser's mate who is Belly's pool cleaner's step father's nose trimmer's accountant soon enough.

Which will probably be more accurate than whatever the Hack comes up with.

The club should never think about recruiting a player who has......
Number one being that the players current club wants rid of him.

Hoges has talent, not raw but well grounded with a skill set almost every other big forward will never have. Let's not pretend otherwise.

Every football club has player welfare people, psychologists, sports medicine, dieticians, development trainers, physiotherapists, assistant coaches and others. I am gobsmacked that none of them - individually or collectively - could get a talented footballer who loves the game playing it.

Peter Bell is the guy who did the deal, but he's also the bloke responsible for managing all those people listed above. Sure we gave up some draft picks to get Hoges here, we also invested $1.3m over two years to get him right to play. The failure of all those other people at the club is the cost that worries me the most.

Now that the club has taken full responsibility for the Hogan disaster and the cap has been freed up, I say they too put a $600 credit on every member’s membership account.

I reckon the mistake footy clubs sometimes make is expecting ex football players to be the best choice for management positions. Particularly those with no previous experience of actually running anything.

Definitely need to Hypen, but I don't see how in this draft. We are also supposedly after outside pace and are interested in Clark, which personally I'm okay with as he's young and appears to have quite a bit of upside. We're also supposedly interested in Philips from Pies. He seems like the poor man's Clark as in second best option. I'd rather go to the draft than get him. His stats aren't much better than Bewley's and he's about the same age-25 next year. Another Colyer?

Plus we have two good NGA prospects who could play on the wing, also Frederick or Henry? And we will need to counter bids for Walker and Western.

So in summary, how are we going to able to address those forward line goalkicking issues with the limited picks we've got?

If Lobb and Fyfe spend the next 5 months practicing their goal kicking....and become OK at it...we could be OK. OK?

Sturt will be a revelation next year, offering us more than just 3 Talls and 3 smalls in the forward line. Added to Walters, Tabbs, Lobb, Schultz and Switta/Henry will cause a lot of defences headaches

In My Humble Opinion...
Bell has mentioned lowering TPP by getting rid of Hogan a lot and I think that’s the real story here.
A pandemic happened and salary caps are being slashed. There’s a few clubs now offloading pricey players as a result. In the same year, a young docker won the rising star which means paying money to keep him (in addition to heavier contracts for Cera, Brayshaw etc as they age and are worth more on the market).
I think the Dockers looked at the expensive players on the list and asked: “which can we most easily do without?”
The answer was, overwhelmingly, “that massively paid full forward who doesn't kick goals”.
I don’t think there’s any more “real reasons” or “underlying causes” than that.
The reason for the pick discrepancy between trading in and out is Hogan’s adjusted market value.
Given the circumstance, I’m glad they traded Hogan for pick 55 instead of Cera for pick 9.
I’m also deeply disappointed to lose Hogan. I was for us trading him on and truly thought he could (might still) be great. And spending 6 & 23 and getting 54 makes us look like chumps.

Hogan , Blakely pick 12 and next years first to Nth Melb for pick 2 to use on Logan McDonald surely should have been worth exploring, we were like a deer in the headlights of loading Hogan for 54 others would have had interest.
