What I find hard to believe is we don’t have salary cap space. We’ve been out of the eight for 5 years and have a young developing list with few stars.
I accept that some teams can pay unders for player while lesser teams have to pay overs, hence why Richmond can pay $800k for Lynch while Gold Coast have to pay $600k to attract Ellis.
This still points to us having made some poor list management over the last few years.

Not unheard of, Adelaide paid part of Josh Jenkins wage this year to get him to the cats, what I don’t know is if you have to count that extra 100k (or whatever it is) in your salary cap? If you don’t you’re effectively buying a better trade.

Edit: for what it’s worth, I am on the “mad to trade Hogan” side of the argument, but must concede the press has managed to paint us into a corner, if we do trade him it’s because we couldn’t sort out his issues, if we keep him it’ll be because he’s damaged goods and no one wanted him even with us offering to pay part of his salary. Either way the worst will run with it for weeks.

It sounds like Collingwood are going to pay up to 300k a year to get rid of Adam Treloar. This sort of thing is massive in American sports but its only just come into the AFL in the last few years. The more you pay of the salary the higher the draft pick in return. If someone takes on his whole salary it might be a pick in the 70's. What a disaster.

I imagine that just about every player is tradeable if the return is good enough.

Hogan has kicked 19 goals in 18 games or something like that. Plus 4 in one game with a couple of cheap frees and 50m penalties. It’s a big stretch to turn that into a 50 goal forward based on that form.

Yeah, he might go somewhere else and carve it up. If he does that’s great for him to be putting in the effort, but he hasn’t done that for us.

I get that he’s been injured and the headspace ain’t right, but he took off late pre-season to sort out the personal issues, plus had a Covid 8 week extension and never really got his act together on or off field.

It’s just not working out for him at Freo.

It would be awesome if he does, but he has delivered stuff all but trouble so far. Either way, we haven’t had a good outcome with this bloke so far.

My take on Freo's continuing poor performance with troubled players is the same as it has been for years.

Maybe we should work on our man management skills before we try to reform players. We mismanaged Bennell, McCarthy and Simpson just in the last few years and it's looking like we haven't learned from any of those mistakes.

Then again, it's always going to be an uphill battle reforming player behaviour when the off field club management behaviour was every bit as poor. That behaviour was in fact supported and enabled by the club. Part of good management is leading the younger club members but 'do as I say, not as I do' is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. We've been good at importing disasters.

Rather than shopping Hogan around, we should shop some of the decision makers instead and bring in people who can lead, who can get the players to buy in and who can bring a positive culture reform to the club.

JLo looks to be a good start but he's going to need a lot of mates to help him move things along.
