Trade Blakely yes, but no way we let go of Hughes and Duman. The latter two will be key parts of our first premiership side.

Sometimes you need to strike while the iron is hot. Both Duman & Hughes trade value right now is worth a lot more than this time last year. While I would be a little upset to see either of them leave, if Hamling, Pearce, Logue & Young come back into the backline next season, Duman and Hughes probably watch from the sidelines. We only have two draft picks of worth for next season, so we need to give something of value to get something of value.

What type of players would you pick up with the second and third round draft pick you got for Duman and Hughes?

Right now we have pick 10, 28 & 98. We have (I think) 4 NGA prospects for this draft, so we probably can’t get all of them with our current picks. If we then also want to look to draft Grainger-Garras or McDonald or even another ruck option, we will need more draft picks than what we have right now.

Shane, you'd get two solid and dependable backline players like a Hughes or a Duman.

Why on earth would you trade either. Hughes is a fantastic pack mark and incredibly brave. There's no way his position is in doubt if the others come back- they would have to remove him. Duman is also solid, but more importantly he is getting better. Watson also looked capable, so there is finally some pressure from underneath. Same goes for Blakely really. After calling for him to get a game all season we saw why Longmuir wasn't picking him- his disposal is not up to scratch. But he is by no means a bad footballer, he just has to get better at disposal. Any other club interested in him would know this so the trade value would be unders. It would probably only happen if he asked to be traded, but i reckon he would be better served staying at Freo and forcing his way in.

I understand what you're saying, Purple Shades. I just don't think the iron is as hot as you think it is.

We would get maybe a second but most probably a third round pick for them. That then gives us picks or points to play with to get our NGA players and maybe some other local talent. I said we may look to trade players “like” Blakely, Duman or Hughes, if these are untouchable, then it could be Schultz, Bewley or Crowden. But right now if Westerns name is called before our first pick of ten, we need to use ten to get him but then we turn 28 into something like 35 or 40, which then lessens our chances of getting other NGA players. What I am saying is we need more picks or points this draft or we will miss out on NGA players we have invested in, or we can continue lessen our hand at future drafts by trading away future picks, which most on here seem to best against.

I think you're a bit caught up in the importance of the NGA players.

So none of our NGA players are worth drafting?

I didn't say that but you're doing contortions with the list to get them. It's not imperative that we get everyone on the list. We delist rookies every year who never play a game, so it seems unlikely that we got all the NGA players right.

Agree that not all NGA ‘s will make it & I’m hardly suggesting we contort the list, merely a suggestion that I feel we may look to trade someone to improve our draft hand. Longmuir & Bell have indicated we will go to the draft to improve our list with youth, so I think (only my thoughts) they would like more than 2 picks inside the top 40 or 50.

If no one bids in our NGA players we can pick the up for free as category B rookies, we did that last year with Butters and Thomas, Butters has gone but Thomas is still on the list. Other than western and the Walkers, not sure if any of the others would get a bid placed. Maybe Biz knows? But with a reduced list size we’d be giving up a known player to fit them in.

After thinking we would need to draft a big backman to cover our injury concerns I'm now more concerned about getting another forward/ruckman marking option. Who knows what we'll get with Hogan, Tabs had a great year, but Lobb had a shocker. Didn't kick goals or take marks and that's what we need him for.
In a good year he was one of the few disappointments.
