Naaah, disagree, Bizkit.

He was held back by Roly. In many of those games you listed, Tabs was subbed out by Roly, so the number by themselves can be misleading. Added to which, a large amount of time was spent at Peel with the club trying trying to turn him into a ruckman replacement because the recruiters never got round to drafting any.

Tabs is just not a great ruckman but he's a pretty handy marking forward

Tabs is not as overrated as a few of those names you mention, Morgan, at least not by the commentators and some Freo supporters.

I'm really impressed with the player Tabs has become. I'm not too sure what we are expecting from a rookie draft pick.
Much of his early games were as a sub...and on a wing. I really don't think that helped his confidence...or his footy.

And he expressed a lack of confidence when he did get the forward role, and , used to get soundly trounced.

I think the best thing for him - despite The Yeti's disapproval - was an extended stay at Peel, until he proved to himself - and the hierachy - that he could be better than the blokes playing on him.

Reckon he's been a different player since that period at Peel, and I think he's growing in confidence with every match.

'Keeping it simple' under J-Lo, is a strategy that has really worked for him. If we get 3 years out of him where the opposition 'really have to keep an eye on Matt Tabener', I reckon its probably worth all the early development years....which is sort of what I'd expect from a rookie drafted young tall forward.

It's easier to be a forward these days at Freo. He gets more opportunities to win the marking contest with the ball being kicked to him the way forwards are supposed to get the ball kicked to him. He's always been good.

I think, that things turned for him when he decided "stuff you Mr Lyon, stuff you media experts, stuff you supporters who don't believe, I'm gunna show you I can play footy. It's got nothing to do with opportunities (which he did not get in great abundance), nothing to do with Lyon sending him back to Peel (as great a myth & bu11$h!t story as Walters redemption), but all to do with his belief that he can play at the top level, given some opportunities to do so.

Tabs wasn't subbed too often and when he was, it was because he was having no impact. He was subbed 11 times in his first 3 seasons (28 games) before the rule was removed. 4 of those 11 subbed games he played between 62-77% time on ground while it should be remembered some of those subbed games he was subbed off injured and others he had barely had a touch.

Again, there's not too many rookie fey position forwards let alone highly rated ones who get as much of a go as Tabs had from his first season onwards. Even more so in a dominant team when his output was very low and costly.

His time at Peel wasn't used to turn him into a ruckman either which is being incredibly flexible with the truth. He was forced to spend time as a relief ruckman when we had no one else with any height in the side but so was Cox and Johnson at stages along with Fyfe. It was never the intention for Tabs to ruck and he did it no more than a relief ruckman in a few games as did many others.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

We won 16, 16 and 17 games over his first 3 years. I'm not sure that's much of an excuse.

I’m with Yeti on this one I think Tabs was a bit of a whipping boy 11 out of 28 games would represent a reasonably high proportion of subbing out. He also would be dropped very quickly, this was then followed with some misfortune with injury.
He looks to me like a player now comfortable with his position in the side. His goal kicking grows every week and I think this is directly linked to not having to worry about his spot.
His willingness to create a contest and crunch packs is under rated. He would be easily in the best 5 big forwards this year and deserves to be mentioned in AA calculations.
Well done Matt Taberner you’ve had a tougher road than some.
Hogan has a lot of work to do to become our best big forward.

The obvious skill he lacked tonight was disguising deliberate out of bounds well enough. But one can understand his difficulty - he's been instructed, "Lead up the wing, mark it if you can, and if you can't, make sure it goes out of bounds". And he's done it all night, until with a minute to go the umps decide its a free. Never mind that he tapped it forward and chased it, Tabs committed the unforgivable sin of "not disguising it enough".
So apart from tackling, chasing, ground ball gets and disguising out of bounds, he's going well. So now can he start working on all that boring second effort stuff? Mind you, Pav's second efforts were often a bit underwhelming. I suspect its a hard thing for big forwards, but Darling seems to manage....
