I don’t understand the cries to turn the game upside down and make changes that change the fabric of the game.
I believe the holding the ball/man, incorrect disposal rule is a simple interpretation change.
I also don’t understand why it is so difficult to restrict interchange. AFL 360 had a graphic the other day showing in 2005 teams averaged 48. This has risen to 120 this season from memory.
These two things might not provide a complete answer but they are pretty easy to implement. In fact they are only rolling back rule changes that have been made anyway.

The cries are usually from the coaches because it's a rule that stops them doing something they really want to do.

No, it's not that bad. There have always been ugly games. Always.
Either you have selective memories or you are just spoilt by being able to watch every single game on the telly every week now.

Don't get swayed by the pseudo analysis of so-called-expert commentators, just because you here more of them and more from them these days. Chripes, Micky Malthouse bangs on about how Fyfe is no good because he doesn't defend much. When you have someone who can do the things he does on a footy field, why would you want him to be defending? It's ludicrous.

I don't really care that super aerobic units can run all day, just stop them being drilled constantly during matches by observers from above through messengers down below. Let them run their running by themselves and they'll play the play for the reasons they were, and will be in the future, recruited. They're good and skilled footballers.

That's not to say I disagree that fewer interchanges would be a good thing, because I think it would be.

You'd get less interchange if you had less people off field to organise the changes. A bit of chaos is the heart of sport.

The playing time has been reduced by 20% but the interchange numbers are maintained.

Did any enterprising journo even bother to ask Clarkson if he’d used his full Interchange quota during last Sunday’s non-game?

The umpires are an easy and familiar target. They probably deserve all the stick they’re being given (especially Margetts, who really should retire), but it seems obvious - at least to me - that footy looks like it does because of footy coaches.

Couple of things. I'm enjoying watching most games, don't mind no crowds, I get to hear more.
Do NOT like shorter quarters.
Am enjoying freo's style despite the losses. We're ok.

I'm sure i heard an umpire say "Play on, he tried!" on the weekend! Now that was a surprise! Not entirely sure that is actually in the rules, but I grew up with it, and it made SENSE!

Blocker, i also am not sure if it is still in the rules, but "play on, he made an attempt" was in the rule book.

What needs to happen, is that the commentators, coaches, players, and some supporters need to realise the umpire controls the game, and he is never wrong.

Zones are back on the cards ,a lot more commentators etc,say now there is a need to stop congestion ,?you think!
Any coaches out there would even give anything a try to stop them losing their job,yeh right .

I like your assertion Mushroom, "There have always been ugly games. Always."

I'm reminded whenever someone waxes lyrical about how the music from their childhood was so much better than the rubbish you get today. But everyone forgets Ooh La Paloma Blanco, Obladi Oblada and the Unicorn song...

No they don't Roger - our ABC keeps playing them every week. In fact, the am radio mulch that forced everyone into buying 8-tracks, then cassettes, then CD players to put under/In their dashes in order to avoid the crap at the time have been blatantly disregarded by ABC radio. I've even heard the Doobies on local radio - this month! They call it "The dance track". Seriously, the celebrity 'dance track'. The Doobie Brothers!

If the game hasn’t changed where are the big goal tallies to power forwards. Anyone that says they didn’t enjoy watching the forwards go against their man and kicking ten never saw it.
Stoppage is king and the numbers since 2005 are undeniable. It’s ugly and boring.

Polly this is an antidote for you: Radio Fremantle. 6am to 8am Saturdays.
Bit early so use this link to the archives:
Radio Frem Sat 6am
He tries hard to give an alternative to exactly the syndrome you describe. And sometimes succeeds
