Win, lose, or draw, I hope these games show our new recruits, and a continuation of the attacking mindset of Longmuir. The scoreboard results this year don't matter, it is a series of practise matches, whatever the AFFL and CH7 say.

Unlike the other mob up the road, Freo haven’t been an embarrassment in any game this season, including R1 against Essendon in Melbourne, except, maybe, the 2nd quarter in the rain, against Port. Each game - except the Port game - seemed like Freo could have won, but somehow...

The signs are good. I realised, sometime while I watching yesterday’s game on TV, that I would prefer to see Freo coached by JLo lose a close, contested game, than a Ross Lyon coached team win ugly.

What about JLo’s attacking mindset are you seeing on the field? To me it looks very similar to last year, which makes sense because it will take a while to get players in the same page.

But at the margins, scoring is down on last year (adjusted for length), we’re getting beaten out of the middle, we’re struggling to move the ball quickly and we seem to be hugging the wings a bit more.

I think we’re on the right track, but I thought that at the start of last season too.

I see the first instinct is to look forward, and to the centre of the ground and take that option if it is there, then look wider. When we are on top through half back and the middle, this is coming off. Some more work is needed on kicking skills, but they are improving in that regard. Our players are willing now, to kick to a contest forward rather than wait (by kicking backwards or sideways) for someone to get free. When we do go back & across, the ball is more often then taken forward, not back across the ground again like the last 6 seasons. Thats what I see.

Totally agree with you on getting smashed out of the middle Morgan. I actually think we are getting smashed in clearances everywhere than under Lyon. This could be because Longmuir is giving more opportunity to others to play a part at the clearance. This could take a while to pay dividends. I don’t understand low time on field for players like Brayshaw. Darcy Tucker seems to have more freedom to get the ball himself.
I’ve noticed a difference in our execution of skill and willingness to attempt a short kick. There seems to be a greater value placed on skill execution. Under Lyon we seemed to be good in the stoppage but struggle in field play. This seems to have been reversed under Longmuir.
We still have an ability to exert maximum effort for very little reward.
Longmuir continues to have the same issue Lyon had with player availability.
Under Lyon we may have won two games by now and still have not moved forward.

I was a bit worried about the number of times we 'kicked to the line' yesterday....

I didn't like that. That looked very much like the last 6 years....only excusable via the fact we are well down on tall timber/ experience
in the backline....

I think the kick to the contest down the line approach (eg, the Collingwood approach) probably suits our list well, but I wouldn’t call it more attacking. I can’t remember us going through the middle that often yesterday, other than Shultz who butchered a few kicks there. I reckon we look good when Hogan is the link player because he’ll give his forwards a chance. CamMac is the same.

I think we are getting smashed in the middle because Lobb and Darcy are getting towelled up at the ruck contest, and JLo looks like he’s throwing different combinations into the middle, which he should be doing. It’s hard to get any continuity if you haven’t settled on your rotations. I’m not too worried about that.

But we do lack some zip from the backline. Wilson still doesn’t look right, but he would really help with that. It probably also doesn’t help we don’t have B Hill finding 30m of space on the way out. That was a real bail out for us last year.

On Morgans point (ie lack of an experienced wing) what did everyone think of Aishe's game?

Seemed 'not involved enough' for a bloke at his 3rd AFL Club.

Would like to see a lot more from him....another 'player who bobs up from time to time', I reckon. We've got too many of those.

I really like his kicking when he does get the ball. He’s had a couple of ripper kicks to Tabs in the last couple of weeks.

But yeah, he could probably have a bit more impact.

Given what you say about Lobb and Darcy in the ruck Morgan, which is hard to disagree with.
What’s people’s thoughts on Meek? I never saw much of him at Peel but what I’ve seen in the few times he’s rolled out in purple, I thought he was better than others on Dockerland.

Very good point DBTS.... why aren't we playing Meek??

We simply must come out of this 'pretend season' knowing what we have on the list.

Maybe Meek is 'underdone' or 'not ready' but at least lets find that out. The worst outcome of him plsying is that 'he at least gets experience'.

It is a complete waste of time playing Tabs in the ruck. Not sure if he was in there all of the time when we got demolished in the centre Q2, but he was in there at least once.

If Hodor's only 3/4 right, spell him, and find out what we've got with Meek ASAP.

Why else is he on the list??

The alternative, is not play him, let Hodor limp in & out through the season, and find out 'buggar all' about Meek until at least 2021...

Meek is an average ruckman and has shown that at reserve level, struggling against WAFL ruckman. Playing him in the first 22 to prove that fact will only hurt us when I'm sure the coaching staff and those who've seen him play know where he's at.
