It used to mean something to struggle, scrimp and save so that in the event things went awry you had the means to ride things out. These were the smart people in the crowd of fools.
Nowadays, when things go awry, the first thing Governments do is pump out handouts. The first thing corporations do is ask for handouts. The first thing stupid people do is expect handouts. The first thing those people do who struggled, scrimped and saved is say I don't need a handout. The second thing those people who struggled, scrimped and saved do is get told they wouldn't qualify for any handouts. The third thing those people who struggled, scrimped and saved do is pay for all the others' handouts.
Who are the real fools in the crowd? And who shifted the rules so that stupid people are favoured by natural selection?
