TOPIC: Freo's Future

I've heard the existential threat talk, very consistent with the reporting about this virus and the subsequent economic impacts; sensationalised.

My view is the biggest threat to Fremantle's existence is the AFL itself not getting through.

What do people think?

I think there are far too many entities in the world, from big businesses to individuals, who have gotten so used to running things up on credit that they have forgotten what it means and what the risks are.

Those risks are now front and centre. They have become tangible and said entities are now carping themselves.

It may be a tad sensationalised, but I reckon it's real.

At the end of the day the thing that cruels a profit making organisation is a lack of demand for its goods and services.

What we are seeing in football and in the economy is strong aggregate demand with a temporarily broken supply chain.

It'll come roaring back.

It will, Hypen, but it would be good to see, in sport, and the rest of society, an equilisation in salary & wages, and a return to reward for effort.

Yeah that won't happen.

I remember saying that after the GFC, thinking people will see through the way we live our lives but it got worse.

Anyway, long live Fremantle.

I don't doubt the Fremantle Dockers will continue to exist as a club but whether that existence will persist under the current structure of both business and ownership is up for question.

The WAFC must be bleeding dollars at the moment. How long before the State Government decide they have other money priorities and our club ends up being owned, Perth Glory style, by some fast food franchise magnate or a bunch of mafiosi with large stake in fleets of prawn trawlors or crayfishing licences or concrete trucks?

We go from baby boomer white male businessmen to pre-WW1 style underbelly front for organised crime. Maybe I'm stretching things a bit, but business life is bound to change.

There's enough equity in the league to get it humming along again. People will suffer along the way and supporters will be fleeced but it generates a steady income stream and there are a lot of public assets that need football to pay the bills.

Worth mentioning that most of the damage will be done by Seven West Media when they take their money away.

The best thing that could happen would be the demise of WAFC. They are there for one reason only. To look after Nic Natinui and the club that he plays for. I've forgotten their name.

Every cloud has a silver lining, it has to be said.

No basil, derwayne or eddie polluting the airwaves every weekend...and none of the roaming brian crap. I'd happily sacrifice the dirty birds for a year of that.

Freo will play footy...as South Freo, East Freo (?)..and no way this AFL Victorian tourism league will disappear.
Tassie might be put on hold as Gold Coast, GWS and that X thing proves the AFL have flushed multi millions down the drain for their egos.
Grand Final on Christmas Day bring it on!
Boxing day needs a kick up the A...

I have two thoughts Hypen: first, I think the situation is alarming rather than the description being alarmist (that said, I don’t know what you’re seeing), and second, while there will be interest in the footy, demand for the AFL in an economic sense requires people and companies to have money to spend on it. All I know is that when you see a conservative government handing out free money and doubling Centrelink payments you have to assume they have reason to be worried about that part.

If I had to guess I'd wager that next year the AFL will end up looking very similar to how it looks now, but the AFL and clubs’ finances (like most businesses) are built on assumptions that are no longer true. No-one quite knows what things will look like in 6 months, so I think they are right to be worried.
