Gil made the comment that C-19 poses the most serious threat to ‘our game’ in 100 years. Putting aside that Gil is obviously in the camp that think the Allies were never in doubt during World War II, the key phrase here was ‘our game’.
Too often people like Gil conflate the AFL with the game of Aussie Rules footy. Sure, this year is going to suck, but next season kids will be playing footy. Middle-aged plonkers will still be playing football.
What Gil means is ‘the industry’ is under threat, which is a term he bandies about except when it doesn’t suit him. Most fans don’t give a stuff about the industry; they care about the game and their clubs. They don’t care about the business that surrounds the AFL, and to be honest it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if the AFL industry trimmed down and the AFL got back to basics a little.
