I think a sustained dose of Black Sabbath-Paranoid is called for Colonel.

I hated Le Cras as a player, because he wasn't on our side. I really liked the way he played, and his attitude to the game. So I'd be happy if we gave him a shot. Just give him a one year contract, and if he doesn't work out, ditch him.

You say give him a shot as if there couldn't possibly be anyone in Australia who is ready and qualified to do the job. The AFL is the pinnacle of the sport, paying professional wages. The attitude of approaching a mate to see if he wants to try his hand at coaching should have died out a long time ago.

I don't want to be potting LeCras over this because he hasn't even taken the job but the way it should work is that he goes down to a lower level league, gets a reputation for being good at the job and then applies for any vacant positions that may arise.

Coaches talk about getting that 1% edge. This is like 15%.

Yeah, you won't see Freo dishing out jobs for mates without experience, like Belly, Muz, Bondy...

They hard to learn their, er...something...whatever...somewhere...

Dr Kevin Ball is still out there teaching people their best way of kicking, Shane.

One of the big problems he faced in his time at Freo is that all was going well until someone saw him kick.

I know you don't have to be a chicken to be on the Egg Board, but in a performance-based environment - playing a game - the practitioners of footyball are still going to respect performance. Which is one of the reasons why we still have jobs for the boys in a multimillion dollar industry.

LeCras was a great kick until Muz broke his arm with his arse.

I don't know if he's a terrific teacher of how to kick. But that's different story.

I know who the young blokes would listen to.

Le Cras was a skilled player, if he can teach what he did he will be alright. he was a good kick and mark.

I usually dont like ex eagles but he seems an alright bloke and certainly not the worst of them.

I am sure JLo is doing his due diligence on appointment and if he isn't well JLo wont be in the job for long.

That's the prevailing attitude in the league. Co-incidentally, if favours the insiders and their mates.

And it's why the standard of the AFL as a league hasn't improved in 20 years.

Fair go shane. Freo has brought in its share of outsiders - internationally renowned Water Polo, Rowing and hockey skills gurus.

You're proving half of Shane's point.

Why do you recruit pumpkins with no experience in coaching footy players in playing footy well to coach footy players in playing well when there's no evidence they can coach footy players in playing footy well and, in the end, they don't?

Unless this is not why they are recruited. Which is the another quarter of Shane's point.

I don't think JL would get Lecras in as coach if he did not rate his ability to fix 1 of our biggest problems, he knows the fella, and how he went about his work at eagles central. The rest was just a potshot to liven up the off sseason, Shane, YOLO.

I remember LeCras the player as skilful and a good mark, but as a TV reporter, I think he's definitely le crap. Maybe, after a season out of the game, he's thinking he'd like to be involved again, because his future in the media seems a bit limited?
He would probably command respect from the younger playing group, as a recently retired player of high reputation, with up-to-date knowledge of the game. He couldn't be any worse than that boofhead RL brought in from Hawthorn, and a different approach seems to be called for.
Shane's misgivings about the AFL's jobs for the boys mentality is spot-on, but the talent pool for quality assistant coaches seems shallow, and we're stuck out on the periphery here in the west, limiting the club's choices even further. I say give him a go. What could go wrong, that hasn't already?

You make a good point Shane. Ex-players can't expect to just waltz into an assistant coach role at AFL level. Having said that, as far as I can see JLo began his coaching career as a development coach at Freo in 2010. Maybe he coached elsewhere prior to that, but I can't see it anywhere. And Brad Scott became an assistant coach at Freo the year after his playing career ended.
