And Sonny back on the track early. If anybody deserves a few extra weeks off with the family it’s that bloke. We are lucky to have him.
He don’t need no skill work.

I reckon his skills have often been well below his standards in recent years.

Show me anybody who's skills improved under Roly because I can show a whole bunch who's skills declined.

I am very much in favour of putting time and effort into making us an AFL level skilled team. I'm also in favour of putting money into it by getting specialist Ass Coaches who can provide input into kicking actions, running actions etc Potentially, we could have less stress injuries, perhaps even less soft tissue injuries.

Not every Ass Coach has to be an ex-player

He may be getting on but if you watch Ben Sokol's kicking action for goal plus hear the praise he has given him, I'd be approaching Austin Robertson.

I think Fyfe's kicking improved last year. I reckon he worked on it. But my point is that we know Fyfe is pretty dedicated, and he would realise that his kicking lets him down. So he would have gone out and really tried to improve his kicking. And while I saw an improvement, it just wasn't that much.

It doesn't matter what Fyfe does, he's no Caleb Daniel. He won't ever be, no matter how hard he tries. And Caleb Daniel could take 12 months off AFL and within two weeks of coming back his kicking would be better than 95% of AFL players.

But of course we need better skills, and even a little improvement is better than none. And I'm prepared to concede that in the overall scheme of training, we will improve by focussing more on skills. We have to decide what we will focus less on. Is it strength, fitness or game plan drills?

We'll be better next season than last, just because of experience. And I'm looking forward to JLo. At least I can be pretty sure we won't play less exciting football than under Roly.

You're defending a stupid position because of the person who took it.

It's very simple. If you practice something you get better at it.

Old dog, new tricks though Shane?

I’m pretty sure if you don’t practice skills you will lose them so I’m all for it but when you draft players without skill initially then you get what you deserve. It’s an elite comp ffs.

Cerra for example came with wraps on his skill levels, particularly kicking. I’m sure with more focus on that he will be a jet. Somebody turned him into an ordinary kick over the past two years.

It's just like house work. If you don't practice it often, the whole place turns into a sh!thouse...

I think some people are confusing skill and natural ability.

I found it particularly interesting to read Sonny's comments about Brett Bewley's skills that he constantly hit his targets throughout the morning. If I remember correctly when Brett was signed it was his kicking efficiency that was his biggest asset and yet his disposal efficiency seemed to drop off as the season progressed and was indicative of the rest of our players'skills at season's end. It would seem that he is now embracing JLo's efficient skills mantra and he could be a big improver next season.

Yeti, I reckon our biggest problem over the last 5 or 6 years has been coaches changing running styles and kicking styles away from what players did naturally and were recruited for, just to justify their position. I see Lecras as someone who will build on what our players and recruits have, not tear it down and rebuild it.

Yeah, thats a danger if it's not done correctly.

Austin Robertson worked on changing Dennis Lillee's running style and the way he executed his run up as part of Lillee's recovery from stress fractures in his back. From memory, Lillee never had that problem again. Not a bad effort for a ex-footballer, who oddly enough was a highly regarded running coach.

If we have players regularly getting soft tissue injuries, it's certainly worth considering having somebody who is expert in that area to assess the strains being placed on the player's problem area. An ex-player is not likely to have those skills whereas a high performance running coach might.

Either way, having expertise in movement can be an asset in managing players to either avoid or reduce the chances of re-injury.

He seems to know a bit about kicking as well from his past history.

I'm not sure what a rowing coach could offer though.

The rowing coach was there to coach the coaches.

He was hired because the club had made a poor decision when they renewed Ross Lyon's contract (no proper process followed there either, I'd wager) and their solution was to find someone to teach Ross how to coach.

They couldn't find anyone who would work with him.
