There is no spontaneity in the game any more. Fans are scared to cheer too loud or say any naughty words for fear of being dobbed to the security brigade and players behave more like automotons each season.
I went to Kangas game with my wife a few seasons back at Etihad, Harvey was still playing and I bagged him with every allowable piece of abuse I could muster and the surrounding Kangas fans just sat an stared. It was the quietest game I've been to, we were getting belted and the only time the home fans started cheering was when prompted by the stadium PA system.
And at our home games if I happen to boo the umpires or the other team I get Freo fans just staring at me for having the audacity to raise my voice to disagree or to cheer the boys on too loudly. It's getting so bad I'm just waiting for the tap on the shoulder.

For the amount required drinks to make it through 25 years.

Going back to my original post, I’m not suggesting that we go down the path of some ra ra Americanised hoopla. What I’d like to see is genuine, meaningful engagement with fans. Something that reminds us of why we chose this club. Unfortunately I don’t think that our head office has a clue about the importance of an engaged fan base. It’s simply a financial transaction at the moment.

Gone is the football social function clubhouse of old.
The Family Day at Adventure World were always great.
Jeff Farmer with his kids and other kids hanging off him,
Belly playing with his small children surrounded by mothers with their kids in the baby pool area.
Very causal and supporters, players and coaches all together having a picinic.
My kids loved the up close and personal interaction from players.
My eldest who would be about 11 year had a Go Kart race with Luke McPharlin Shane Parker which ended in the three car collided in a cloud of dust.
My wife enjoyed the players frolicking on the water slides.
Chris Connolly was had been coach for several years and he made a speech which started by saying.....
THIS IS OUR YEAR!.... "crowd laughter" ....NO REALLY!

What’s a Viking clap? Should I google it?

There are so, so many aspects of Freo Footy Club culture that are skewed, off the mark or just not there.

Big ticket items and small.

The outward language from the club in the past fortnight is that this stuff, riding on the back of passionate members, is a focus to fix and this will “make Freo a great club and a powerhouse”.

Let’s hope so.

Well the Vikings were renowned for their looting, pillaging, etc so I'm sure they picked up a few unwanted things along the way.

Canberra Raiders tried it at the NRL GF yesterday. The clap was a success but they lost the game.

We have lost so much of the engagement we had.

The sausage sizzles on training nights
The coach speaking to supporters post game
Movie events
Adventure World
supporter elected Board members (remember those)

It doesn't have to be a big thing just opportunities for supporters to see the players and officials and mingle a bit, it builds a sense of belonging.

Physics dictates that the Viking clap would sound like total balls over a longer distance than 50m or so.

Typical bloody physics, always trying to get in the way of a good bout of clapping.

We have the drums, I'd like to see it tried.

Physics? It sounds more like a Human Biol issue to me.

Viking clap, nastier than your average sexually transmitted infection.

I'll steer clear, thanks.
