The Fremantle Football Club, in consultation with the WA Football Commission, has been reviewing its governance structure as part of meeting the ever changing and complex needs of an AFL club.

How can take them seriously when they open with that.

They didn't like having the elections so they rigged them. Then people called them out on rigging the elections so they got rid of the elections. Don't carry on about meeting the needs of an AFL club. It was just a power grab.

Particularly when we can clearly see that they intend to give Peter Mann the first position.

How insulting to us members. It really only became a popularity contest after the club starting put up ex players to run against other members. But democracy has resulted in Trump and Brexit so.....

Have their only been three elected members?

Les Everett, Docker Dave and Kate Grieve were voted in. Then Ben Allan, Peter Bell and Peter Mann were elected unopposed (where I'm led to believe that, on occasion, people were talked out of their nomination to avoid a messy vote).

All I can conclude from that is that Les Everett is a bastard to work with.

I used to sit behind Docker Dave in the old northern stand before they erected the new stand. On numerous occasions, I cannot ever recall someone running quicker down 20 sets of steps to the fence to hurl abuse at the umpire or opposition players.

Geez it was fun back in those days.

Popularity contest? What an insult to democracy and voting systems everywhere. Maybe we should go back to royalty and Ben Allan and his kids can run the club forevermore.

This is absolutely horrible news and spits in the face of the idea that Freo is a club for the people. They continue to not give a toss about the members and only want to diminish our ability to influence the club.

The WAFC have bullied every other nomination from contesting the member elect positions over more than a decade so they can turn around and get rid of them via the board members they've instilled. Now they have all the power to do anything they want without recourse.

Even if you're naïve enough to think Alcock and co have the best of intentions, all it takes is the WAFC beginning to install OOFTIT shills onto the board and we will implode.

That implosion started a few years ago, Biz. The AFL cannot allow this to happen, it creates a huge conflict of interest. It has been the meddling by the WAFC from day 1 that has shafted Freo.

Thanks to Dockerland at least I knew this was likely to happen. I feel the article was belittling of the membership.

McHenry is Slime though and through and was strong supporter during the Cousins era might have even been WCE board member.
Couple go questions from the non-initiated
i) How do you get on the WAFC Board?
ii) Who has oversight of WAFC?
iii) How do either clubs get control of their destiny? (Guess this would happen faster if the WAFC was taken over by Fremantle members)

Maybe everyone is approaching this from the wrong end. Eggy's second question about the oversight of the WAFC is simple to answer: the Minister responsible. An elected official acting on behalf of his electorate (within the parameters of his party). Instead of a grass roots insurrection try going at it through the top. There's a state election next year. Just my opinion.
