Rationalise and riddle me this:

So, four WA lads in mix for top 30 ish of Draft. One aligned to us (Liam Henry) considered mid to late first round.

Draft order:
www.afl.com.au/news/2019-09-15/indicativ...rder-finals-week-two

Us pick 6, and 24 .... and no third or found rounders

Saints pick 5 but no second or third rounders.

Allegedly Hill and Ed out.

So, how do Saints actually get Hill.

And how do we get Liam Henry with points not early picks, and Devin Roberston, Luke Jackson and Elijah Taylor.

www.afl.com.au/news/2019-08-08/cal-twome...-guide-august-update

And if talk about future direction of the game kind of like look of Sam De Koning a 200cm running defender

I reckon we’ll somehow end up getting Liam Henry by matching the bid with the most fifth round draft picks in AFL draft history.

It’s a dilemma. How do we replace 7-8 players with 3 picks unless we get multiple picks for any players leaving. Forgetting flights of fancy, we may get pick 5 and a second round pick that st kilda will have to trade to get. Maybe similar for Langdon if he goes. It’s highly speculative what this may be but let’s say that leaves us with 8 vacancies and 7 picks. If Henry goes mid round 1 as expected then that is around the 1300 pt mark. That’s a min of 2 second round or 4 3rd round picks to match. Either way that reduces our picks again significantly (if we even have the capacity to match). I’m sure it’s been mentioned here before but this is bordering on negligent to not have stocked up on second and third round picks over the past two drafts... we really need to somehow get to a stage we here we have around 8-10 picks in the second, third and fourth rounds or we will have to burn a first rounder to get Henry, and still fill anything up to 4 places on the list with delisted players/rookies. I can see the trade period involving us passing over high draft picks for hill et al in favor of multiple second rounders.

We'll do what we always do and give up next years draft picks for a massive premium.

I bought some tree plantation lots that run on the same principle.

Confirmed outs;
Main list:
Bennell
Kirsten
Sandi
Bellas
Jones

Rookie list
Nyhuis

Confirmed ins
Rookie list:
O’riilley

Possible outs
Main list
B Hill
Langdon

Trade Hill for pick 5 and Langdon for pick 20.
Then trade pick 5 to Brisbane for picks 17 & 19, trade pick 6 to bulldogs for picks 12 & 30.

Go to draft with picks 12, 17, 19, 20 & 24.
Take Jackson with 12, match bid for Henry with pick 17 (should cover it with 20% discount) draft best WA kids available with 19, 20 & 24. Should be able to get some of Biz’s list, likely Rivers, Taylor & Thorn?

Edit: whoops forgot I had picked up pick 30 as well from the bulldogs, so that would be the pick we use on Thorn and we get someone else at pick 24, so 6 picks in the top 30. Surely that’s enough to start a dynasty on?

So that’s 5 onto the main list. Upgrade Carter to main list and speculative pick 78.
Then another rookie to replace Cater.

We likely miss Robertson but he’s Glass’s nephew so probably wouldn’t want to come to us anyway.

Don't you get to top up your list at the end of the draft rounds, if you don't have enough picks to cover your losses?

If we end with 5,6,20,24,78 that should be a pretty good hand and definitely 2 picks before we need to fork out for Henry. I am guessing if a bid comes for Henry at 14 from the eagles 20, 24 are used and then we get back a pick around 28 odd which we should be to get a good player at, then use pick 78 for speculative pick and hit the rookie draft as well. It's the most critical time in our history. We need to nail this draft and pick a good Coach and CEO. Lets set ourselves up for a bright future!

Reading this thread just highlights to me the massive gap between requesting a trade to a club and those two clubs then working out a deal. Will be interesting to see whether this one goes to the 11th hour....

We mustn't give up next year's picks as we have 2 Academy players to bid on plus Jeff Farmer's kid as a father/son and that's not taking into account anyone else that we might want to pick up. The kid that played CHB for U-18s is in next year's draft and looked pretty special against the older kids as an intercept marker, I think his name was Denver Grainger-Barrass, plays for Swans in the WAFL.

Stepping back from the horsetrading for a moment, in the aftermath of Ross-Ros Rebuild, I see the need to go down one of two paths.

Either continue to bring mature ready-to-go talent straight into the team, aloingside stars who want to taste finals again before they retire, or bite the bullet by embarking on a deep rebuild that targets a swathe of young talent from high in the main draft and rookie drafts, to develop over time?

Personally and with hindsight, I think we've erred too much to the former in most recent drafts, after casting aside too many burned-out players that has left us with big shoes to fill all over the park, and too few high quality players left to carry the resulting chaos. So, we've had to pin our hopes on bringing in established talent.
It is a regretful, that several of those cast-offs have successfully resurrected their careers with better-performing clubs, and could have been used better here.
Also, we have taken on good key players that we can't get on the park, with ever-recurring injuries to key position players casting doubt on the capabilities of the club, and the captain stating his desire to return to finals as the years tick down on his own career. That might be down to lingering parting pains re RoLy, but places the club in something of a dilemma.

I will admit that I backed some of these gambles, but am now thinking that in the long-term, the club is best served by drafting aka 2008: bring in lots of good young fresh legs to build a running style and attacking flair like Richmond, Dogs, Essendon, West Coast (yes) etc who hunt in packs and score heavily.

Mainly I hope that Bell et al articulate their strategy openly, and choose to target our local WA young talent. If our paid recruiters think that we should overlook the next Sidney Stack and Tim Kelly, make them accountable to someone well-informed like Bizkit, as the Member rep on the board. Biz you know you want to.

I do not have the temperament to deal with those on the board! I just like watching entertaining footy.

You're right about going to the draft over mature agers, especially given we're losing more midfielders in their prime after Neale went last year.

It was Denver Grainger-Barras who took marks at will and dominated across half back in the final game vs Vic Country. He looked an absolute star and another reason I wasn't a fan of Sumich's handling of the U18 side. He should have had a taste in earlier games and received the chance to develop more.

I think the reason Denver was shielded early was because of his age as he is in the younger group and not eligible until next year's draft while the position he filled was a key post in defence. I don't see that as a problem but at least he was brought in during the championship and finished up playing a key role in the team's success.

Lots of sides had underagers in key posts, that's what the championships are about. He is the same size as any other key position player in the champs, if not bigger so didn't need any shielding. It would have been great to see him get some more game time rather than the same older players going at it every game. He showed as much when finally given an opportunity in the last game.
