The members wouldn't vote in Betty from row D. We are still able to make good decisions and assess the resume of those who apply for the member appointed positions. All the board need to do is remove former players running who ruin the process and make it a popularity contest.

The member positions need to be what they were designed to be, a voice for the membership in club decisions.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

we also need diversity, not just a set of white Anglo Saxon baby boomer men from accounting and legal backgrounds.

so maybe Betty is in with a chance (and might offer more than Ben or Peter)

Stacks' mother ran El Chapo's investment bureau for a decade in case you think she's just another Betty.

I’d be worried about the Board if we were a small Pacific Island nation or representing Hong Kong......but we are a WA footy club.

The WC won the GF last year.....did they or Collingwood have member elected Board members?

If you think one member elected from the membership will make much difference, you are kidding yourself.

All Collingwood board members are voted by the membership. You pay $100 and get vouched fir by a member and you are a member. They area democracy we are not.

I don’t care if voting for our board m lakes a difference or not fir me it is the principle of the matter.

With all due respect to Merc I don’t trust the bastards. We have 2 vacancies of member reps. Next up is most likely Pav and Sandi.

"...We need experience and skilled administrators and governors on the board..."

How's that worked for us so far? Running out of top, top, men, and women? Surely you are not implying we can't find acceptable skill sets within our membership rank to vote for? Outside of the remit of the WAFC?

Personally (and I do speak from experience) I find it necessary to seek some independence and breadth of perspective for a board to avoid being little less than a rubber stamp for the executive. I'm sure the early boards during MOB times were a bit put out by having wildcards like Docker Dave in there, but I'm sure it kept them on their toes, and procedure and protocol probably benefited. Although this directly led to the putting up of ex-footballing candidates in the ME seats, and hence Mercury's more recent efforts at pointing out this wasn't in the spirit of the arrangement.

I'm all for a maverick on the board, actually. I think its very Fremantle. Within reason. Of course a board should be seen as united and speak through the chair, but I would like to think that recent boards would have benefited from stronger membership perspective. Does anyone consider we have a member-elected board member we can approach with our concerns? Anyone know how to contact one?

I think Alan Carpenter is still a member - he's not at Wesfarmers anymore, but he's around I think. Good man.

Quasi, before worrying about member elected boards etc. you should be getting in touch with Hypen to find out where he got his new spellcheck app from.

We have a relatively new chair with 4 out of 8 board members also pretty fresh (~ 3 years in). They’ve just moved on a long term CEO and coach, and issued an announcement about a new approach to ensuring they hear what members have to say.

If the Board has the right structures in place to get messages from members, do they really need an elected member? Did Dave, or would Betty, Peter or Ben really be able to claim to be your voice, or even the voice of a majority?

I’m with Merc on this (and I've never met the man). I believe the Chair is well intentioned and it is possible that this is an improvement that will set new direction that keep more members happy. I’ll give it time before I decide whether its more of the same from Steve Harris lite.

And always remember, us seat renters get the final say. If we stop renting seats, the club will act. If I'm not wrong, that is what happened to Rosich and Roly - the seat renters spoke, and the board got scared.

That's the kind of thinking that got us into this mess. Why wait till the sh*t hits the fan to act? Clean it up before it gets the chance to get all over the walls.

We knew RL was rubbish and dragging the club down the drain for a long time but didn't act when we should have.

We know this system leaves things far more open to exploitation and back door dealing, don't wait till it happens to then go, "oh, maybe we should do something about this". There's no reason for members to give up their rights to a vote on board positions, just make the voting process fairer.

I said I would trust the Club to do the right thing. I was sure that this would be a step forward. I was wrong and many of you told me well prior to last Thursday's quiet announcement that I would be disappointed.
