TOPIC: Academy Selections

Kobe's not available until next year and we should be able to pick him up as Father/son pick but he may be a first round pick by then so other draft picks may come into play. As a rookie pick the Peel full forward Ben Middleton might be worth a look. 5 goals 4 behinds, knows how to get the ball and a good kick for goals.

Just read another article from Fremantle club site and apparently Leno Thomas the kid with the match saving smother is also a Next Gen Academy player. Some good kids for us to pick from.

Why do all our next gen players play for Claremont.

I think because they all come from the Kimberleys which is Claremont's district.

Spot on Corp, do you know anything about the kid who played alongside Leno in the backline, Cameron Anderson. I thought he looked a likely prospect.
The ruckman Jamieson, not an academy player, really looks the goods, tapwork excellent for a young kid and apparently old Percy Johnson's been doing some work with him.

So how many next gen players do we have and how many are available next year? Don't know if this is all of them?

Well I'm not sure. I only found out about Leno Thomas today from a 2018 Freo website item which said that at the time we had 4, those being 18 year old Jason Carter, 17 yo Leno Thomas and 16 year olds Liam Henry and Isaiah Butters.
Now since then it seems we have added Joel Western to the list but I'm not sure who else there is on our list. We unfortunately missed out on Francis Watson by a year when he was drafted by the Weagles prior to the Academy coming into being. Does anyone know of any others on the list??
Based on their ages it would seem that Henry, Butters and Thomas are eligible this year but I'm not sure of accurate birthdays and when the cutoff date is for eligibility.
Thanks for that Corp. Great article. I'm not sure where some of those kids are playing though.

I remember seeing a listing of the Freo academy kids and their ages/clubs etc during the year but I forget where and a quick google didn't help me out. I believe we can bring kids into the academy quite young (11 or 12yo's) but it's more of an overall approach until they are a few years out from being drafted. So effectively, we could have a very large number of kids eligible for academy selection.

All the more important to retain draft selections and if possible, add more. We could have a bumper crop come through in the next couple of years and I'm pretty excited by the level of talent in our region. If we develop it well, we could be set for a large influx of kids from the NGA.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

What impressed me most today was these kids application to the task at hand and particularly in Leno's case his never say die attitude that ultimately won his team the flag. Also Butters' disposal around goal was outstanding and he has a bit of X Factor about him. What a great game. I think there's going to be a few drafted from these teams, both Claremont and Peel.

So if the NGA turns out to be successful for us like a Neesham Concept Mk 3?
Then watch the V/AFL change the rules quicker than an umpire can bounce the ball before a goal review.

There's already an article on the AFL site last week about how they they think the Next Gen/Academy kids and Father/sons draft conditions are too generous and they're looking at changing them next season. Basically to do with how you match other clubs bids on these players. They don't seem to like how GWS, Sydney and other non Victorian clubs are farming these sources at the draft to gain multiple good selections at the Draft. Same goes for our next gen academy.

Check out the Claremont Football Club website for a great article on Leno Thomas. Posted as feature article-Leno Thomas. Sorry I can't do the clicky link thing. Talks about the work Tendai and Johnno do with him and how they found him a job working for Sandi's landscaping business.

Great to see all these indigenous boys tied to us. It's like the old days with Neesham. Also great to see what a great role The Gu and MJ are playing in their development plus guidance and help in giving them the ability to cope in the big smoke.
