TOPIC: The new powerhouse.

Too little too late. The biggest decision the club made (the move to Cockburn) is in direct opposition to fan engagement. Our identity was forged in a 100 year old cauldron of Fremantle football history within in a port city (Pav nailed it when he referred to "Wharfie time" to rev up the troops). That history and blue collar location separated us from 'them'.
What better way to disengage with your most loyal supporters than to move to a souless location that has no footy history or connection to the port. We may as well have become a co tenant at Subi.
We moved to Melbourne four years ago - the move was a lot easier knowning that I could no longer pop over to Freo oval and watch my team - my team had abandoned me after I walked in the streets to keep them in Freo when they were first formed.
With some luck we are 5 years away from getting this team To be a contender and another 5 for them to be a "juggernaut". Regardless, while they are located in their current sandpit, they will never be the true Freo juggernaut that they could have been if they had stayed true to their roots.

I'm at a loss to why they moved in the first place. I didn't understand the need then, nor now.

Freo council wanted to redevelop the oval (and FFC facilities) to be more a sports, community and cultural hub and FFC, by dint of the history there, could have been part of that. That would engage supporters a lot more.

Steve wanted nothing to do with it. He started a fight over it to try and scam millions out of the council to fund his deal with cockburn. Breathtaking arrogance, given Freo enjoyed a peppercorn rent there, and the council did everything to keep them there.

Many here rightly bagged the marketing of the ETAF, which would supposedly make the club a more professional outfit, having space and quality equipment. Or did Steve just want a nicer office? Because none of these things made a lick of difference.

The man has pretty much shafted everything to do with Freo.

3 pages of comments for a Hack job article. I’m disappinted.
How anyone can think that getting WA kids interested in basketball to try to hedge into the AFL’s market is anything similar to trying to boost the financial profile of a WA based AFL club is beyond me.
And if the club wants to get to the kids, it’s already doing exactly the right thing by investing heavily in social media. Yeah, those kids clinics are great and we all have fond memories, but the average person under 21 will spend more than 4 hours a day consuming social media so that’s exactly where to get them. And the club seems to be delving into that just fine.
This club hasn’t had money problems since before the Connelly days, and though our numbers are down, they’re not short on coin.
What our club has is a problem winning games, a problem we’ve had since the Neesham days. The Wildcats sell because they win. The slime sell because they win. The Glory sell because they win.
It’s not rocket surgery.

Regardless of why we may be struggling with support - the sporting fanbase in WA is a highly contested market, and we don’t have the generational support that the older clubs have that will allow them to weather a period of poor performance through family and suburban loyalties. There will be a cohort of potential supporters that we lose if we don’t act to remedy at least one of - on field performance & style of play; fan connection and club presence; player retention, attraction and promotion. We have struggled with these, and maintained a solid membership base despite this, but this won’t continue. I have noticed in my kids friends an increase kids who don’t like the eagles supporting East coast teams. Watch Brisbane support here boom over the next few years. We can’t expect to survive as the protest vote against the Slime - at some point we have to actually offer something up to attract people. I believe Alcock and the board have realized this. I hope they can achieve this sooner rather tha later but there is a lot of damage to repair.

West Coast's bad years are very few and far between. So are Freo's good ones. There's the issue.

We don't need to think about engaging kids. No matter how old you are, no one wants to watch a teams that sucks.

What are you talking about. Kids have picked their team well before they turn 21. And 5 year olds aren't on Twitter. Teenagers spend a lot of time on social media socialising. They're talking to each other, not engaging with corporate media. When you put out a tweet or a facebook post telling people to download your app to get the latest news, you are not building a bigger supporter base, you're selling a product to people who are already engaged enough to buy it.

When you send an 18 year old out to talk to the media, it creates content that media outlets are desperate for and they play it to a mass audience. When you show the personality of the footballers rather than force them to stay on message, it gets aired and it gets people interested in your team. People love Nat Fyfe when he's Nat Fyfe. People aren't all that keen on Nat Fyfe when he's rattling off soundbites like a politician. That turns people off your club.

We have a problem winning games but we also have a problem being a middle of the road nothing club. We have a problem of not being interesting enough for non-supporters to want to watch us, or play us or even talk about how bad we are, let along how good we are. We are invisible to the outside world because we created this protective bubble around the club, to avoid being teased. That means we get Sunday afternoon games on Foxtel, we get last spot on all the football shows (if they mention us), we attract average people to come work at Fremantle and players find it a compelling place to leave.

Football is about rivalry and we've shied away from that for a decade because our CEO didn't think he could win the fight. Richmond were a powerhouse football club without having to win a premiership, winning took them to the top but embracing passionate supporters made them big. They were never ashamed to be Richmond. We're often ashamed to be Fremantle.

We need to be a club that people want to join, not because of the wins on the board but because they want to be part of something exciting, and that thing is the fans. It's not the Queen songs on the fireworks. It's joining the mob, being part of a gang. It's a group of people who can organise a march over a bridge in a few hours the day before a Grand Final. It's people who make their own signs and outfits and decorate their homes and offices and share a bond of hatred for the other mob.

And it's certainly not winding up the price of kids football jumpers and clothing.

Shane, we are not ashamed to be Freo, the corporates are ashamed and afraid to be Freo. Good, let them bugger off to the corporate club, they will enjoy it more. Let us get back to being Freo. It is what we are, the working man's club. Sorry if I have offended anyone, but I believe that the foundations of Freo are IN Freo and we should return. The ETAF was a dumb idea, and maybe we can sell it to Nissy & co, they are more suited to the whole concept.
As for Rosich, I am still convinced he was put in place to do a job, and he did it.

Went to our school's Fathers Day event last Friday, and part of that day involved kids dressong up in their favourite footy colours.

Small rural school. 47 kids.

2 - yes, 2 - wearing Dockers stuff. About 3 wearing local footy club stuff, one forced to wear a Collingwood getup, and, the rest in Eagles colours.

It was terrifying seeing how some parents bring up kids.!

Having said that, try being a 5- 12 yr old kid and follow a team that has a boring, decrepid, low scoring, game style, and struggles to win a third of its games for the past few years.

And there in lies the problem...we've just lost a decade of supporters/members.

Theres gonna have to be a fair old turnaround , and its gotta be done pretty promptly, in order to get some of these kiddies to take off the blue&gold stuff, and put the purple on.
In fact, Knowing 5-12 yr olds as we all do, its highly unlikely to happen.

Well done RoLy!

All this talk of a new powerhouse has me expecting we’re on the verge of announcing a significant new sponsorship with a major energy retailer.

I've been mulling this over for a few days and have come to the conclusion that I don't care and don't want to hear anyone spruiking Freo as a powerhouse anything.

I'd be a million times happier if the Prez just came out and said that we were putting all our efforts into being a well run club. If we are a well run club then the other bulldust will take care of itself.

There is a huge amount of work needed before we get to that point.

It’s not a new thing. Fremantle have made statements like this a few times over the years and I find it frustrating. Every club wants to be a powerhouse. Every club wants to be successful. Fremantle have struggled to execute even the basic tenets of being a successful and strong footy club. The club has made the finals 7 out of 24 seasons. When they make statements like this it just makes supporters even more frustrated and gives even more ammunition for derision from eagles fans. As if they need it. It’s great they want to be a powerhouse. It’s achievable in the long term but they should be internalizing the sentiment because everyone is pretty jaded and they have wasted alot of time.

A bit like those people who stand in front of the mirror every day and tell themselves they are an exceptional human being, destined for great things.

If you have to do that, you probably aren't.
