Kelly has fulfilled his contract to Geelong in the most exemplary fashion. He is no longer under contract and Geelong shouldn’t use the restrictive AFL trade system to frustrate his move to the team of his choice, even if that means getting less than the pundits say he’s worth. The AFL industry does not seem to understand that a club doesn’t own an uncontracted player. Sooner or later the system will be challenged.

WC shouldn't get him cheaply just because they've got rubbish picks.

Geelong took the punt on him and should be rewarded on his way out.

That's the system and its in place for a reason.

Also, I don't get why Kelly's apparently got it in for Freo for not drafting him, WC didn't either. He just sees them as successful and it so its a simple case of a beggar being a chooser. Again, why should Geelong be forced to deal with one club when they've bent over backwards for him?

So lots of things I still don't understand. If no deal can be done, can Kelly go in the draft? I assume he can. But then, what does he do when Gold Coast pick him?

But let us assume that all the other clubs steer clear and leave him for WC, and they pick him. Do they then need to sit down with him and decide on a salary? Or can they just go, "Its $200,00 per year, take it or leave it"? And if they do offer too little, can he refuse to play?

If you give me answers I'd be grateful, but if it could just play out in real-time next year, I'd be ecstatic.

This whole players nominating their destination thing is just a crock brought on by the free agency system pushed by the players association.

Players and player managers now expect that they can be assured the same treatment from clubs even if they are not free agents. Sometimes still contracted. As if it is a right.

Chris Scott is correct when he says if players expect complete say in when and where they are traded, they are dreaming.

They can ask, ask nicely and say please, but they can't be completely disgruntled if it doesn't happen, and they can't then hold a grudge. Doesn't sound like Mr Kelly is the kind to hold a grudge, does it?

I mean, it sounds like he could be used as a good defence in the Claremont serial killings case, as an alternate suspect and that he's the primary cause of climate change but that could just be Freo supporters a bit annoyed with his choices.

1. Geelong cannot allow Kelly to enter the draft, they'd get zilch for him. But WC would also miss out as Kelly would be picked up by another club quick smart in the draft.
2. WC keep carrying on about not trading players as part of the deal. Without this I cannot see how they do the deal even using future picks - unless Geelong are a bunch of softy pushovers. Kelly at WC could cost Geelong a premiership. Geelong know this and will want a trade that suits them viz. 2 first round picks including one in the top ten..
3. Freo could have sown up Kelly's return to WA by now - to Freo. Kelly is being somewhat disingenuous in saying he wants to come back to WA for family reasons and yet refuses to come to Freo even though this could be done right now.
4.I hope Freo move on from Kelly and use their picks in rounds 1 and 2 to inject top quality youth into the club.

I have a four-year-old who seemed well capable of serial killing at age 2, so it's not outside the realms of possibility.

I still say bid him up. We will beat Geelong for the next decade no matter what picks they get. I'll enjoy watching Tim Kelly win two brownlows while the team in blue and yellow around him wane into an irrelevant puddle at the base of the melting glacier that is Gillon's AFL.

I think it is essential that we stay involved in the talks about Kelly to ensure West Coast pay fair market value. This isn’t necessarily to spite the Eagles, although that’s an added bonus. The less picks West Coast have at this draft, the better our position to acquire the West Aussie under 18’s.

Plus 33 in the mix for an exchange of later picks?11 We didn't even have to bid him up. I would feel ill if we were doing that.

That's excellent for us, we helped drive his price up and they are out of the running for WA talent.
