My expectations were low for Saturday night. I fully expected we'd lose it. Heresy, I know.

Fyfenator's ABC Radio post-match was interesting. He was asked about skills work and he said (paraphrasing)

"There's a lot said about skills work, but its up to each professional player to take responsibility for their craft."

I've come to terms with Ballas being at the end of the road, last year actually. 211 looked like he could/can play on, but Darcy is youngster and is coming along well.

I don't understand the logic of a football club leaving one thing up to the player and everything else up to a dedicated coaching staff.

If you could improve a professional player's goal kicking by hiring an expert goal kicking improvement coach, why would you not do that yet you would hire an expert fitness improvement coach to improve fitness.

They hire dieticians to help them eat better, they hire wellness coaches to help them think better, they hire someone to tell them where to stand and they hire someone to carry their bags for them.

But getting better at kicking should be their own initiative?

It's almost as if our entire football department is made up of buffoons.

It sounds like it's about time every player took responsibility for the game plan. I don't mind Lyon getting a Million bucks a year for doing nothing. The big win we get out of that is he does no damage to the club.

1st game of the season for me. The thing that stood out was the selection of the wrong option.

Kicking long when a better option was available
High kicks to midgets
Hand balling when they should have kicked
Mundy handballing backwards (although I think Mundy has some runs on the board so I’m less annoyed with him)

I didn’t think it was skills as such (as in hitting a target), it was finding the target

Invariably the bad option came back over our head to get a goal.

The sad thing was that it wasn’t only the young players. It was hill (he had a stinker in my view), Langdon, Fyfe, Blakley etc.

I've seen a couple of references to the Mundy handball backward; if its the one I'm thinking of, he really had no options forward and was about to be tackled by three(?) players. Probably cut him some slack there.

It's easy to cut Mundy some slack, he's been magnificent for us for a long time.

But while I'm at it - given that RoLy never mentioned this during his presser - I would like to thank Cam McCarthy for his selfless role at full forward on Saturday night. He sacrificed his own game for the benefit of the team...and...and all that other stuff RoLy said about Mundy and Fyfe when they did the same.

Considering the game is called football why are players chosen at the highest level who can’t kick the ball?
And how many years at the top level before the blame lays squarely at their own feet?

I wouldn't expect by the age of 18 that someone has perfected their craft. What I would expect is them to be reasonably proficient at kicking and then, upon arriving at an AFL club, there to be professional coaches who can provide them with advice on technique and arrange training exercises that they repeat over and over again to get much much better at kicking.

It's not a binary thing where you can kick or you can't kick. It's not a static thing where if you can kick well at one point in time you can always kick well. You practice. You get better. You get better and kicking it different circumstances.

It's called football training.

Fyfe clearly walks his own talk. His kicking has improved a lot this season.

But our biggest problem is team selection. Why they didn't play Tabs, Hogan, Lobb, Pearce, Ryan and Wilson is beyond me...

Left footers with no right foot:
Matera
Walters
Darcy
S. Hill

Right footers with no left foot:
Langdon
B. Hill
Wilson

I had learned to kick with both feet by the time I was 14, what's their excuse?

I don't think every can learn to do it. Being lefty, my right foot is completely unco, I can barely make contact with a ball.

Those same guys didn't play against Geelong funnily enough.
Or are you trying to start another thread about our continual long term injuriies and fitness team?

Injuries are a rubbish excuse, Essendon have far more injuries to players who are probably more important than our outs. Their only ruckman (Bellchambers), their star tall forward (Daniher), their star half forward/midfielder (Smith), one of their best established mids (Zaharakis) as well as a plenty more depth and important players. They had about 6 blokes rushed back into the side underdone too like Hurley, Parish and Saad.

They still travelled all the way over here and were untroubled by us. The effort from the Freo players couldn't be questioned but the way they played football and their ability to execute that can. That sits things squarely at the feet of RL.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
