TOPIC: Draft Prospect

As per this article on the AFL site, Brodie Kemp has just done his knee and looks to be out for the next year. I know we have our problems with our own medico's but I'm hoping he slides to our first pick because he's probably my favourite of the interstate players this draft.

He's a big bodied mid (193cm) from Vic Country and plays very similarly to a Paddy Cripps or David Mundy. He was phenomenal against SA at the champs and backed it up by dragging Vic Country back into their match up vs WA. He's a very good mark but has brute strength and power out of a stoppage that few can match. He's done plenty of good things at TAC cup level too and I had him pegged as someone likely to impact from his first season.

Obviously that won't be the case now but draftee's first season or 2 on an AFL list are about building the body and getting it ready anyway so missing 12 months of footy won't hurt him at all. Hopefully it builds his desire to succeed at the next level and allows him to work on getting a big pre-season behind him for season 2 on a list. As a country kid like Manic, he should have much less of a go home factor so I'd definitely be taking the chance on him come draft day.

There's a few articles and video's on him such as this tidbit earlier in the year but he was probably a top 3 pick for mine before injury, I think he's a real possibility now for Freo.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Literally the only thing Cripps and Mundy have in common is they are both tall.

Thanks Bizkit, looks the goods and has appeal to the current coach. Am concerned we might do the trade thing with our 1st pick which in my view will be an early one.

All three are big bodied midfielders who are fantastic in and under with the physical stuff and again bursting out of congestion to deliver the footy well. They are very apt comparisons although I'd think Kemp is probably a little faster but a bit more raw than Cripps who spent a lot of time in the middle before being drafted.

Mundy however was a KPD before being drafted and only moved into the midfield after a couple years playing at half back. Kemp has begun that transition over the past year and shown fantastic signs, stepping up in the big moments just like Cripps and Mundy do (goal with the last kick of the game vs SA to win it for Country and 2 second half goals against WA to almost get his side home).

If we trade away our first pick this year, our admin are dumber than I thought.

Why wouldn’t you stay close to home and draft Deven Robertson with your first pick and Liam Henry with your second (on the basis that I assume we will have to match a bid for Henry somewhere between our first and second picks)?

They are good players but if there are better available, you should grab them. Kemp is better than Robertson and you wouldn't select Henry until someone else bids on him.

And there is little retention risk in drafting country players, NT's and Tasmanian's.

Well the first question should be can he kick straight? Because the recruiting staff usually forget to check.

I was thinking the same as Demo1

I mean after the roaring success we had with Morabito. Zac Clarke, Bennell, A Pearce and Hogan, what could possibly go wrong?

We should stick withe local talent which was, at the end of the day, the best in country. Devon Robertson should be a priority as should Liam Henry and Luke Jackson. He was all Australian ruck over 200cm, 100kg and plays like Brodie Grundy. Why do always fall into the trap of drafting interstate boys and then pay overs trying to bring West Australian boys back via trades after they've proven they were the best prospects in the first place.
And Biz I think you'll find that Robertson won the Larke Medal which may seem to indicate he was the better player when it counted.

Injuries at 17/18 when the body is young and growing are far less of a worry for the kids longevity than if they did it in their prime or twilight of their career. Plenty of kids get injured not only in their draft year but the next few as their bodies develop and they adjust to an AFL environment. I think there's far less risk taking on someone like Kemp but the reward would be huge.

Ruling a kid out because of injury is pretty narrow minded and unless there were someone comparable to him available at the same pick, you have to grab him. The West Aussies available are not comparable.

You shouldn't be so scared of drafting someone outside of WA, most of our greats have come from outside of Perth and if the player from interstate is better, you draft that player.

Yeah Biz,

I have no worries with your assessment on how good he could be but I'm definitely iffy with your assessment of his long term injury prospects. I don't agree that it is narrow minded at all.

Simply put, Freo has an appalling record of injury management. Utterly appalling.

I can see the risk of mismanagement is perhaps much greater than you are crediting and having little confidence in our injury management, I would prefer we played it safer.
