TOPIC: We own our performance

Bricklayer, dentist, bus driver, shoe cobblers, vegetable growers, bank robbers - everyone is defined by results. But footy isn't? That's easy to accept I guess - hard performance to sell it though.

If you don't like weasel words, Ross Lyon is not the coach you want to watch being interviewed.

It's his one true skill. He could be interrogated for hours on TV and say absolutely nothing worthwhile, or that you can make any sense of.

Apparently, Ross and the players have reviewed it and already moved on, which is an implication that everyone else should too. Nothing too see here, another bad day at the office.

Is it a skill or just a function of the fact he has nothing of substance to say?

Think of an analogy for a 91 point annihilation at home for the ninth straight time with any other field of human endeavour - let alone a business that needs customers - and you'll be gobsmacked at how out of synch our football club is.

A bus driver that sometimes drives his route as often as he doesn't, regularly sideswipes parked cars, hits the odd pedestrian and keeps running off the road and getting stuck in the ditch. Then he finally takes the bus spectacularly off the Harbour Bridge with 30000 odd riders on board.

A bricklayer that sometimes fails to put cement in his mud, occasionally doesn't overlap bricks on courses, more often than not comes up short on his length and heights, finally drystacks a load bearing wall that topples over and crushes 30000 odd inhabitants in a building.

Wow, the permutations on this are endless - not one of them good. If you have no idea on what the something is, how can you own it?

Ask the boys at St Kilda who are still trying to piece together past phrases......and resurrect a broken club....how they feel about " we own our own performance".
Ross is fond of cementing awkward situations with a quasi intellectual wank response and when questioned further throws a tanty and walks off in a huff....it works when the media are muppets but every so often a Caroline Wilson will shirtfront the guy and leave him in a puddle.
For the board to remain silent is a disgrace, for Belly to tow the line is a disgrace and for the loyal supporters to be fed such a fend off is a disgrace.

Apparently our performance is tracking along nicely because we have improved from last year.

We had some absolutely horrific and appalling performances last season so I really don't see how that can be used a yard stick to measure our performance this season.

Also "we've been in every game we have played this season (except the derby)". I take this comment to mean that we have been in a winning position in every single game we have played.

Whilst I acknowledge we haven't been flogged in many other games I beg to differ that "we've been in every game"

We never looked liked winning the following games:

West Coast Round 4
Adelaide Round 7
Richmond Round 8

Against the Gold Coast in Round 2 whilst we only lost by a small margin we were completely outplayed and also against Essendon in Round 9. Both of these games were low scoring mostly as a result of us trying to turn the game into a congested slog. I suppose you could argue that we were in both of these games but we certainly never looked like a winning team.

Also we shouldn't just be "in" the game against the Suns, Carlton and Melbourne. We should be flogging them or at least winning comfortably given we are into our 4th year of a rebuild with a very talented list.

A couple of weeks ago we were the "best 4th quarter tem in the competition" and we had "never suffered a blow out". Both of those things whilst true when said at the time have now been proven to be false.

I think we have been "owned"
After some deep thinking I feel like I have walked into a casino and I am putting my money into a one armed bandit called "the Roly". It sort of crystallises how I feel each weekend when I go to watch my team play after I have paid my money.

Of course, we own it. You couldn't give that **** away.

But I do like the metric used by Roly and Bell to justify our improvement.

Apparently our losses are by smaller margins this year. If you're satisfied that smaller losses means we should be pleased by the improvement, then I recommend you become a seat renter. You can still watch us lose but most of the games won't be over by half time. Some can even last until the final quarter before we lose again.

Of course, if you're not left satisfied by smaller losing margins, then too bad. You don't run the club and you don't count. Shut up and pay up

Yeti, I put my hand up and declare, one of the yardsticks I had for improvement this year was an elimination of the thrashings or smaller margins. We had managed to achieve this until the weekend but I want more than that. I want to be confident we can win matches.
We narrowly avoided blowouts in a couple of clashes this year. The ones I thought were one sided were Essendon and Richmond.
Improvement would also mean, winning convincingly against the teams we should beat, not losing, and not limping over the line.
Previously we could beat Carlton
Carlton and Melbourne played on the weekend in an enjoyable competitive contest in which both teams scored close to 100 points.

How are margins relevant if you're not defined by results?

Not being able to win a single derby in the last 5 years shows some basic ineptness/ incompetence in the coaching staff.
Smaller margins etc are just KPI fluff ...
