TOPIC: I’m done

What if 44 players, our runner Mzungu, the 34,000 supporters that regularly front up to home games and Troy the guitar guy all decided to step away from the game to focus on their mental wellness for a bit?

I'm not making light of it - I've lost too many footy buddies and mates precisely for that reason - but I honestly think it might be beneficial for everyone.

Which game to we boycott Polly? Sydney, Geelong or Essendon? I say we choose one and just don't turn up. Demand that Rosich go (and Lyon if you like, but we really need change from the very top).

A boycott would never happen Roger, but there are plenty that feel like Mushroom I reckon. It was a hypothetical that wondered if everyone stepped away at the same time what would happen - it actually came from watching Ed Langdon have two severe panic attacks in front of me in the city end last night. It wasn't funny, it worried me a lot - he's just a kid that didn't want to eff up.

The season is shot to pieces and I see the value in a boycott to send a strong message.

I would be a bit concerned how the playing group would handle it but if it was made clear it isn’t about them I think they would be ok.

How can this be put into motion? If there was ever a time to do something like this it is now. Something official needs to be put on social media to organise it and generate enough interest in the mainstream media to make it happen.

Remember how things were 12 months ago?

Well here’s a reminder:

The problem has festered........we can’t let it fester any longer.

That's disturbing to hear, polly.

If members of the playing group are that badly strung out that suggests to me there are internal problems that aren't immediately obvious.

I hope its just the one player rather than a more general problem

The most confusing thing for me, and possibly for everyone is the lack of clarity around the strategy of the football club. Specifically around whether we're trying to be a professional unit that wins premierships (big decisions to change the culture eg move to high performance training facility, change of colours, recruit high profile coach) or be the poor boy of the afl that throws up tantalising glimpses of potential but which everyone knows will run off the rails at some point with no expectations of improvement. (poor management - personnel/medical/financial/supporters, take your pick)

Simon Sinek talks about starting with why. I feel like the club has lost its "why" somewhere along the way. I used to know why Freo was, well Freo. We had a shitty start, we were faced with a powerful incumbent team, but we were different, and we were going to do things differently. We might not have had the best players but there wasn't too many questions about their commitment to the game, at least not from the core group of players. I remember in the early 2000's driving through Freo after the Derby with the stereo blasting out the song (Poly would have been proud) and people on the streets were having a laugh and singing along. There may have been a march at some point but my memory has faded. If you tried that now, you'd get a bunch of funny looks from people wondering which home you'd escaped from.

Its waxed and waned over the years and peaked in 2013. We haven't been the same since, we'd tried to reach the summit, failed, and now we're back wondering how to get there again, oh and is it really worth it, why not just bum around in the middle of the ladder, we're all getting paid and the expectations aren't too high.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you're going to be high performing, be high performing and manage accordingly. If you're going to be a football club first and AFL money making organisation second, then take the players and the coach out behind the stands and read them the bloody riot act in a way that they won't forget so at least we'll see some of that purple passion next week!

Glad you've cooled down Noddy, but Cox was out because he was dropped.

Darcy and Banfield were also out because they were dropped. Bring in Lobb & Sandi for their first games back from injury, no WAFL game, (I do agree neither of them should have had to play at Peel), but drop the player who could have given them a bit of support through the game. What does Banfield have to do to be considered a footballer? He had a red hot go the week before, playing in a position that was completely unsuited to his experience and style, and becomes a victim of the loss.

Even against Carlton, a much smarter (well if I can see it even a almost as dumb) coach would have played Mundy as the tall forward option and Banfield/Blakely as the midfielder. Same for the Derby. Mundy, Fyfe, Walters are almost out on their feet by half time in the second half of the season, and nothing has been done to rectify that. We have a front runner like Matera whose place in the team is invulnerable because he can kick a bag of 4 goals against teams we should be flogging by 20, by seagulling on the end of the hard work, but when things get tough, he can't be found. Banfield would at least have had a go this week.

I'm not done. I don't think I can ever be done as I would have to give up my love of Australian Rules and I could never, ever support another club over Freo.

I am, however, shattered. The eGulls are a far better team and that hurts to admit that. Not just better - far better. Their ruck and midfield ran rings around us and we hardly got our hands on the footy, and when we did we fumbled and butchered the ball. As Polly expressed earlier, I really worry for our youngsters.

I posted this photo on another thread. I wish I had some paper bags, as this is how I feel. I am miserable but I don't want those life-sucking eGulls supporters seeing that in my face.

I don't agree their ruck ran rings around us. Sandilands was beating Naitanui but it looked like no one had even trained with him, they were all standing on their opponent expecting him to lose the ruck instead of being on the moving giving him something to hit.

In the end Naitanui gave up and just started jumping into Sandilands in the hopes of injuring him. They are nowhere near a 90 point better team, we were just stupid and completely under prepared.

Okay, ran rings around us may be hyperbole but we were beaten in the ruck. Just in terms of hit-outs, 31 to us and 47 to the eGulls. Head to head, as in Sandi v NicNat your observations may be correct, Shane, but the eGulls had 14 centre clearances to our 9.

Like last week, we won the ruck, but lost the possession contest, too negative while opponents got to where the ball was going.

As Ive said before, NN can only do the 'tap to myself and barge thru" if we are not smart enough to man the defensive side of the bounce/ throw up..

We weren't.

Is that the midfielders' fault, or the midfield coaches fault, or the coach. ?

Its one of those three, but its certainly not Sandy or Rory's issue.

Surely, we were awake to this. Its akin to opposition teams ensuring that Wilson doesnt boot the ball 70m down the guts to a waiting midfielder on the kickout (when did we last see that tried incidently...?).

Other teams a alert/ smart enough to do these things. We aren't.

Personally, I think our midfield coach is as much of a joke as his boss...
