Walter , his philosophy is that it is never as good as it seems and it is never as bad as it seems ,
So don't show any emotion when it is good ( don't celebrate ) and it doesn't matter when it is bad because it is not that bad , so don't wory about it ?

So there is no need for emotion !

Which would be all good, FreoZZ, if footy wasn't an emotional game.

If I'm putting my conspiracy theory hat on for a second, I think Judd's recent comments that interim coach Teague is out of the running for the Carlton job along with his comment that Carltank is looking for an experienced coach, plus the meeting with SOS after Bolton was sacked (yes, I know they own a business together), and the way that Freo players played, suggests to me that they put 2 + 2 together and surmised that Lyon is off to Carltank next year. The icing on the cake for me was watching David Hale trudge back to the coach's race during the Derby - he was literally the last one to leave the ground and had a look on him like he just realised he was out of a job. Anyway, none of this or all of this could be true, but I'm looking for reasons why the past players like Barlow, Spurr, Pavlich and McPharlin, and Son Son for that matter, all think that Lyon is the best coach Freo's had. And, don't tell me Belly can't think for himself or he's drunken the RoLy kool-aid. I think they've all realised that the only way Lyon is leaving is if he breaks his contract voluntarily, and the only way he does this is if he's got another job lined up. The whole rebuild/recruitment was geared towards seriously challenging for a premiership in 2020 (although early finals return would be nice for 2019). If Lyon's checked out for any reason, I could see how this would impact negatively on the playing group.

As I said, I have no insight whatsoever into the day-to-day happenings in clubland, though I note that the last shellacking we had from the Weagles was in 2012 (scored a total of 36 points) and the following year we made the GF.

I reckon Lyon's a coaching mercenary, as in "extend me now", or I'm happy to walk, as he did after being headhunted by Freo. Interesting to note for St Kilda supporters who were happy to see Lyon leave. The coaches after Lyon were Watters (33% win ratio then sacked) and Richardson (on a similar trajectory, currently on 38% win ratio). Everyone thinks that Lyon is a 'finishing coach' not capable of "rebuilding, restumping, re-whatever". But at St Kilda had a winning percentage of 51% with G. Thomas; Lyon's was 64%, and then pathetically low winning rates with Watters and Richardson.

I'm not the greatest RoLy fan, but be careful of what you wish for. If Lyon goes, and we replace him with whoever, things might be worse than they are now. And that's scary.

Finally, I keep hearing Sumich's name being mentioned. Hagdorn and Hardy are full-on Sumich fans. But from his record of going for jobs, Sumich only wants the Freo job (perhaps because he doesn't want to relocate), and some of the reasons why Hagdorn and Hardy put forward sound like they come straight from a disgruntled former coach.

FYI Jooter- David Hale hurt his back badly on Friday evening or Saturday morning playing footy with his kids. That's why he was trudging off. The poor bugger can barely walk. He might be out of a job too, who knows, but that's the main reason he was dragging his arse around.

Thanks Spud, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed his demeanor and that there's a perfectly good reason behind it. He looked absolutely miserable.

I understand Shane, which is why I say that Lyon's a coaching mercenary; if he was offered a decent deal at Carlton, I reckon he'd jump at it, and people know this.

BTW, Carlton's on the same kind of trajectory - upwards - as Freo, though I reckon Freo's a year ahead. Carlton's legit, though they clearly thought that they were going to be better this year. Watch out for 2020 Carlton fans.

Re: the Derby; don't discount that the Weagles were well and truly up for this game, gunning for a top 2 finish which would virtually guarantee another GF appearance, timing NicNat's run, along with the return of Barass, they virtually have as close to a fully fit list as is possible at this point in the season, which should send chills to the comp as they gear up for a Richmond 2017-type run (injury free). This state would be unbearable if the Weagles went back-to-back.

I reckon Ross is smart enough to know he has to walk away this year, while he still has some level of credibility. He is still regarded as one of the “most astute” coaches in the league, but if he stays another year and continues to fail, he’ll remove all doubt about his “astuteness”.
He’d be wise to accept Carlton’s offer, if they are masochistic enough to make one.

If Longmire leaves Sydney surely Ross would be interested in that gig instead of Carlton. Too much accountablity in the Blues gig. SCG is much easier to lock down every second week and much less media attention.

Surely west coast are outright favourites for the flag. They are miles in front of anyone at the moment and won it last year without three of their best players. Currently they are injury free. They will be looking at a hat trick this time next year and may have Kelly and Coniglio by then. The result on the weekend is such a killer for for us trying to lure a player like Kelly. I would say almost zero chance now unless money is his objective. Would you take twenty percent less to win a flag? Most players would.

Scary isn’t it?

In general I agree with Jooter. I think other clubs are interested in Lyon and he will want an answer from Fremantle at seasons end. It would be best for everyone if he left. It is interesting how the narrative around Sumich has changed on this site. I recall being moderated on occasions when promoting him as a potential coach in previous seasons. Maybe Shane has mellowed, or maybe we are becoming increasingly desperate.

The previous week they went a free kick from losing to Hawthorn. So maybe curb your enthusiasm a tad, Basil.
