TOPIC: Sack the coach

Surely the players are picked to play for us because of their skills. Are we the only club that seems to unskill them?

Not sure if he had the red or blue hat on (I guess together they make purple) but he did change tack a bit - instead of we'll learn from this and move on etc etc, it was a lot about the umps and protecting Fyfe - does he really think saying that crap will make us like him or something?

Dunno if he is trying to ingratiate himself with some members of the playing group. Yeah I know a few have come out in strong support of Lyon but I think he has lost some of them at least. They don’t look like a hungry team playing for the coach or club.

So, let's see, Nyhuis fluffs dropping the ball onto his foot to successfully kick the ball twice, and that's a coachable skill, and by inference, if he doesn't do it, it's the head coach's fault? Or if Hughes kicks into the man on the mark (who by the way, crept over the mark without the umpire telling him to come back), which then leads to three momentum killing goals, that's again, the senior coach's fault because it's a coachable skill? Ball gets delivered bullet-like to CamMac who doesn't mark the ball with his hands in front because he's being held, and that's the senior coach's fault?

Criticise the senior coach all you like for game plan, arrogance, general vibe, whatever. But let's apportion the clangers to their rightful blame. Maybe our list isn't as good as many of us think it is. Aside from Fyfe, Walters, Hamling, and a few other usual subjects, many had below par games.

You're right Jooter, to a point.

A player who makes too many errors on a day is going to have to take responsibility.

But if there are too many errors on everyday then there is a shift, it becomes the fault of the idiot who picked him to play football or the coach who's teaching him.

So I ask you, have you seen any of that before?

For sure but looking at the big picture the head coach is responsible for creating an environment and culture where players footy skills improve, where they feel confident, enjoy their footy and where the players and supporters can expect some success on the field.
On the face of it Freo are further away from that than they were a couple of years back and that’s down to the coach and the others responsible for running the show.

I think it's more than valid to criticise the senior coach for not preparing his players well enough.

Well Jooter, since Roly is the who makes all the decisions on player development, I don't think it is at all untoward to criticise him when he fails to develop those players.

Maybe we should get Mark Harvey back to build and develop another squad for him

It most definitely is a coaching issue when certain patterns are repeated year after year. Isolated errors are normal but things like not giving yourself full advantage, when you have the ball in hand after a mark/free etc...is a basic coachable action...

The players aren't practicing enough in their spare time....

If this is what it looks like when players and coach are in alignment, I’d hate to see a game after the coach loses the players.

Just to clarify - I never said that a $1.1m/year head coach should be sacked, but hand to foot and connecting with the ball is a skill that Auskick coaches can coach. I've seen kids acquire that skill fairly easily - it is a coachable skill, that's all.

Yeah, ideally he'd just coach better. It would save a lot of hassle.

Come on, Shane.

Don't you know he's coaching better than ever.
