moodindigo,

there is nothing inexplicable about it.

We've done it for so long and so often that I think it's part of our game plan

It was clearly intentional ...two hands with 100kg of force launching a bloke toward a fixed object which the other player obviously knows is there....what’s careless about it? Was he looking the other way, no? Did he do a similar thing minutes before, yes. Christian is asleep at the wheel, must have been running late for happy hour at AFL house.

McMacca spreads well, like a man whose eaten too may HJ or McLard burgers. While some seem to have conceded already, great to see him play. Another flog to boo and beat.

I bet he was thinking - that Perth Stadium is a mess, the ground is too hard, there are no ambulances and they built the fence too close to the boundary.

Bloody Victorians.

Isn't he an eagle bred?.

As for McGovern, kick the footy to him by all means, but kick it a lot higher, higher than Gary Lyon even, so he has to wait under it, giving Cox, Darcy and co time to arrive with the footy. See if he is keen on the intercept mark then.

What does it say about the AFL's priorities, when ripping off the bookies gets you a 10 week suspension, and putting someone head first into the fence with the chance you could cripple them gets you a 1 week suspension.

One turns a contact sport you could win or lose into a contact non-sport with a potentially predetermined outcome.

The other turns a contact sport where you could get injured into a contact sport where you could get injured.

Just out of curiosity. The Paywall says that West Coast don’t risk a longer sentence by challenging McGovern’s suspension. Is that true?
I realise they’re referring to the auld system where you got less for pleading guilty, but if the tribunal, on review, can reduce a sentence, surely they must also be able to increase it?
For a start, by changing impact from medium to severe. Which it clearly was.

I'm pretty sure they're wrong.

D) CONTESTING A CLASSIFIABLE OFFENCE CHARGE
A Player charged with a Classifiable Offence may contest that charge at the Tribunal
in its entirety or may seek to downgrade the charge. A Player who successfully
contests a charge will not receive a sanction or will receive a lesser sanction in
respect of the charge (as per Regulation 18.6(e)). The Tribunal may also determine
that the relevant offence should be classified differently under the Table of Offences

Uh huh. Maybe the West should put a disclaimer under its masthead; something like

Please be advised information and assertions made in this publication are probably wrong. The West Australian accepts no responsibility for errors made because of the ignorance of its reporters and columnists or the absence of sub editing or fact checking at this publication. Or Basil Zempilas.

I have only watched the incident briefly, but my initial reaction is, if it was one of ours I would be a little upset at a suspension.
I struggle with the current situation in which players are being suspended for arguably play related incidents, but non play incidents such as striking are let go.

People get all uppity when someone gives another player a little tummy tap. This put Guelfi out of the game.

The push in the back rule was introduced because too many players were getting seriously injured and couldn't turn up to work on Monday, so it's not like this is just an aspect of the modern game. You can't push players in the back and into a fence and/or chair. It's dangerous and there's no need for it.

In the back generally means the pushed player goes head first into whatever is in front of him. Guelfi could only go into stationary (chair) or fixed (fence) objects - with force, at speed. That's simple - adios McMacca.
