TOPIC: You're A Bald Headed Flog

There are female umpires now, just saying.
When football hooligans get arraigned before the local magistrate, the consequences of their choices always seem to be someone else's fault.

This guy was with the Carlton cheer squad- who would have some sort of code of behaviour. Probably thought it was nothing too consequential but but he drew attention to himself.

Worse, at the Richmond game in Perth, a guy at the city end, launching loudly into our forwards as they peppered the goals against Richmond with a number of close misses.
The AFL decide to make an example: not a hanging offence, just a 3 game ban, where he can easily watch the game on TV or at the pub. No-one died, no-one got hurt. Plenty of time for this fan to reflect,, and maybe modify his take on it.
There is yelling, like in Q4 of the Bris game, where the crowd were up and about. Then there is gratuitous abuse.
Where the line is, is not always clear but at least the AFL are sending a strong signal

As for this umpire, who will likely be adjudicating our games before the season is out: he might read Dockerland.
I think he should be lauded!.

And with that throwaway joke you undo any point you might have been trying to make, Morgan.

Daniel Rich doesn't like being teased any more than anyone else does but you feel justified in hurting his feelings, probably with a belly full of grog in you, the same way this man felt he was within his rights to hurt the umpire's feelings. I wouldn't do either but I wouldn't push my good upbringing onto yourself or onto him.

If the AFL are cracking down on it, it's news to me. It sounds more like Nicholls was having a bad day and felt the authority of his whistle should extend to the other side of the ground as well.

Massive over reach by the AFL.

This umpire Mathew Nicholls is the same one who officiated in the Sirengate game between us and St Kilda back in 2006 when he as controlling umpire failed to hear the siren and allowed the Saints to then kick a point and then gave them a free kick after the siren to kick a goal. Maybe his hearing hasn't improved or he's now wearing a hearing aid.

This Carlton fan is really unlucky. On any other day he could’ve used the defence that he was calling his own team a flog.

There is a fat bald headed guy that hosts a sports show on tv that uses the term flog all the time ?
He appears to considers himself to be right all the time , he may have to change his ways .

It’s a very interesting argument this one. Where is the line when it comes to what can be shouted out at the footy? Is one fan allowed to say certain things that the fan sitting next to them can’t. For example if an indigenous supporter abuses and indigenous player by referring to the colour of his skin, does that supporter get kicked out, is the player offended? If the man abusing the umpire was also bald and was also a flog (which appears to be the case) is that ok. And since then N word has been posted in this discussion, African Americans refer to themselves as that quite often, mainly as term of endearment. Can an African American shout that out at the footy, but non African Americans can’t?

You're not giving us enough information to work out who you're talking about, freo00.

Shane, making fun of someone's physical characteristics is mean, and that is entirely my point (I should have used sarcasm font). I would never run up to Rich and yell that in his face while he was leaving the field of play. If I did, I would probably understand getting turfed. My point is, why should people be able to yell that stuff in any of these guys faces? Telling someone they are no good at football or umpiring, or you don't like some aspect of the way they play or umpire the game is fine, and general booing is ok, but when it descends to a personal level like physical appearance it crosses the line for mine.

At least the trade off for someone like Rich is earning millions of dollars over his career. Why should an umpire who has to work during the week have to put up with that in the weekend?

Now is it ok for people to make fun of others on a place like Dockerland, like the incessant jokes about Lyon's weight? Well, that's a matter for others. You could say that the target is unlikely to read Dockerland, and I'd say is a distinction, but running up to a bloke at their workplace to deliver a personal sledge? I think that definitely crosses a line.

What should have happened is Nicholls should have kept walking and then, during the week, said to the AFL or to his union rep "Look, this thing where we get abuse shouted at as walking off the ground has got to stop."

And the AFL would then put videos up before the game, with players telling people what the new standards of behaviour are.

Not just send the red coats after random people he didn't like. He shouldn't have that authority.

Ok, maybe sarcasm is the wrong word. Maybe deliberately pointing out my own hypocrisy (does that have a font?) the way I did about being upset about ‘maggot’ but not swearing.

I’m able to say this is complicated and we all have our own views about what crosses the line. I don’t know where people get the moral clarity to say Nicholls was in the wrong.

Must be your good upbringing. I’ll let my Mum know you reckon she dropped the ball next time I see her.

Am I going to get kicked out for calling an umpire a cheat? Because we seem to get those umpires all the time.

Wording and intent aside for a moment, I agree with Shane's concern around the AFLs handling of this matter. If they, or anyone else, ( e.g. Stadium Management, Security) have changed their approach then communicating the change is the first step. Actually it's probably the second step. The first step should have been to assess how the hell they are going to police this change without creating inconsistencies.
I'm sure we can all agree that there are hundreds of idiots at every game who say a lot worse than this ejectee. The AFL has now created a rod for their own backs by essentially invited us to report these idiots to security with the full expectation that they will be booted out. If this comes to fruition I expect that we will spend more time watching punters being punted than players kicking the footy.

(The above is intended as a comment on the change process. I'm not suggesting that the intent is wrong as I'm sick to death of sitting next to semi drunk supporters who do nothing but abuse players and umpires. Criticism is one thing but angry abusive foul mouthed commentary is something we can all do without)
